Can only run small maps on my current laptop and even that is slow. Am going to buy a new laptop. Can anyone recommend a laptop that will run Civ V well? Or tell me the things it will need - eg processor/graphics?

Thanks in advance.

"Well" is a relative term. There's also "within my budget". I can think of a few that I would consider capable of running the way I like, but I don't know if you're looking to spend around $4000. Also not sure about availablility in the UK.

I'd look for something with at least a decent quad core and GTX 680M graphics.

I recently purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X875, and it runs Civ V on max settings flawlessly (even on huge maps). It's a lot of money, but it was worth it for me becasue I'll probably use it for 5 years. Even 2 or 3 years from now it should still be a pretty powerful computer. They have some cheaper models too that are still pretty powerful.

My only complaint is that the battery only lasts about 30-40 minutes when playing civ. But if you are near an electric outlet then it's no big deal. It's basically like a very portable desktop. I would get one of those cooling mats for it too that way if it's on your lap it can ventilate. I just got a cheap one for something like $20 and it works fine.

This is the UK website. I think the electric outlets in Europe and America are different, so you probably need to order the UK laptop or you won't be able to charge it without an adapter. http://www.toshiba.co.uk/laptops/qosmio/x870/

I play on a dual-core i5 laptop (2.53GHz); 4GB RAM and 512MB dedicated graphics. It is 2 years old and was only mid-range back then but plays CiV fine on medium-low graphics, including huge maps.

That said, I would recommend something with a little more juice. That ASUS above looks perfect and is a great price. Something quad-core with 6-8GB RAM and 1-2GB graphics will be around £500 - £700 if you look around and you should be able to play CiV on relatively high settings too.

Not sure about the cost in the UK, but i have the samsung series 9, and it can run any size map or graphics stock. My guess is it is a little above the price range you want however.

I'd rather go for a bigger GPU than a big cpu. So in the 600£ range I'd prefer this Samsung for playing Civ V.

If it has to be below 500£, then this one has about the same performance of the ASUS listed.

Edit: That Lenovo seems to have only a 64 gb SSD for storage. That's not going to work in real life, so you'd need a HDD installed. So maybe this one instead:

My new computer is outside your price range (Dell XPS 12 - I5, 8gb ram, 256 ssd), but I want to alert you to an option to consider in your purchasing decision - touch screen.

My ultrabook converts to a touchscreen tablet. The windows 8 touchscreen setup for Civ 5 works extremely well. Everything is very responsive and intuitive. I've logged about 75 hours playing G&K in the last month and I've been very pleased with the experience.
