Recommended games similar to Civ ?

I love Elemental. Not so much because it's perfect now...but they are constantly improving it and I know it will be great at some point.

After thinking that all through the beta, i'm starting to be skeptical this long after release. I'll think long and hard before i get another stardock game. They always seem to have a reason why it will be awesome soon, but it never quite happens.

As for other TBS 4X type games, im really liking Sword of the Stars, only got it recently though so im still in the honeymoon period :)

I did a bunch of reading online in forums about elemental and I read that it is very buggy. The impression I got was that it is just as buggy and unbalanced as Civ 5 and that I should wait a few months before buying elemental.

It's much worse, Civ5 contains an amount of bugs similar to other games on release, while in case of Elemental they also made some very bad gameplay decisions (now being fixed by Keal), which made the game "bland", for example:

* factions of one side being almost the same (even the civs in Civ5 are more different because they have their UAs, UBs and UUs, and in a fantasy game the factions should be much more distinct)
* (related to the above) lack of different races (theoretically there are a few races in the game, but the differences between them is only visual, they should have a least slightly different unit stats)
* very unintuitive and obscure interface (as opposed to Civ5)
* uninteresting unit creation (there are many weapons, armors etc. to choose from, but they don't really make a big difference, it's best to pick the best available ones and mass produce units with them instead of creating a varied army)
* cities of minor factions don't grow at all, even after you capture them (city states in Civ5 are much better)
* the campaign contains only one mission which is something like a tutorial (a good campaign is a very important to me in a fantasy game)
* tactical combat is very primitive, compared to other games like Age of Wonder series, HoMM series, and the new versions of King's Bounty
* there is not much difference between spells of different schools of magic

Overall, I think Civ5 is much better that Elemental, but with Kael working on the latter, this situation may change in a year or two.

I was actually more skeptical right after it's release, I'm thinking now that it's going to be good. I think 1.1 is a good step in the right direction, but it still has a long way to go. I do think that Stardock listens to it's fans much more than 2k/Firaxis, and the communication between the developers and the fans is second to none...

Well, pulled the trigger tonight and ordered :

Europa Universalis III Complete & Heir to the throne Expansion.

Total Cost : $15 USD
Playing a game that's got depth: Priceless

Besides, I figure we need to support the "smaller guys", cause we see what happens when the big corporations get their hands on game franchises.

Next up: Elemental ..... in a patch or two (another company that needs our support) !

I just picked both of those up about a month ago. EU3 is an incredible game. VERY detailed and a lot to learn, though. When you get them, register them at the Paradox forum (I'm assuming you're new to Paradox games, I apologize if you know all this already):

Doing this will give you access to pretty awesome strategy guides. They helped me learn a lot.

Thanks very much for the info !! ... the Strategy Guide will make it a little easier "to get up the steep learning curve".

cheers

Europa Universalis III (while great) isn't a TBS, it's actually a real-time strategy game. You can make decisions while it's paused though, so it plays better than most RTS's...

That's a bit of a misnomer as EUIII is TECHNICALLY a TBS, with each day being a "turn", the thing is you can make the turns happen so quickly that it feels like an RTS.

But time passes on it's own, there's no "turns" in a TBS sense, where there's an end turn button. Unless you pause the game, time marches on.

Sword of the Stars (that markieness mentioned) is a capable TBS/RTS fusion with the empasis on the TBS. Gal' Civ' II is very much like our beloved Civ and also enjoyable, if brutally challenging.

There's also an open, pseudo-remake of the X:Com games under the title of UFO Alien Invasion...it is VERY good, any XCom fans will get a kick out of it. I do. Plus it's free.
I like free :)

There's also a open version of the classic, wonderful, beautiful, excellent and awesome 'Deuteros' in production, but the forum is a little quiet.
In the mean time, try hitting some retro gear sites, car boot sales or pawn shops for Deuteros and a platform to play it on. It's only available on Amiga/ST but if you can make the effort/expense you'll be well rewarded. :)
Man, i miss Deuteros. (sniff) :(

I think i'll take my own advice ;)

They're about to release a major patch (it's in beta right now) that improves Elemental exponentially. After it comes out, I have no problem recommending the game. But, if you buy it before 12-31-10, you get the first major expansion free.
