hello!

I think i'm a bit stuck in this regent game. the settings are continents with 8 opponents but only 4 left. i'm barely holding my own and i need more income as ALL my cities are in wealth. any advice would be appreciated thanks.

a save is included below

Your infrastructure is your problem:

no markets – no banks – no money, no upkeep and no research
also no factories – low production, takes longer to produce units and buildings

not even your capital has a factory

You are in republic – guards / military police inside your territory are not needed and useless, they do not act as military police.

Marketplaces would make people MUCH happier…! and bring money.

Switch to communism, you are religious, no big deal! your cities are size 12 and you can rush the most dire needed improvements by population.

Then replace your irrigations – much too much, you need mines, production.

WEALTH should never be used -> better build markets e.g.

Communism will help you to cut your military spendings to zero. And make all your cities productive. Then produce and improve your infrastructure. railroad your territory, your worker ratio should be around 1 to 1.5 per city roughly – and you need them earlier, as improved tiles are power, you have some 8 workers for dozens of cities.

Build infrastructure, workers – not a single more Mech Infantry is needed.

An Intelligence Agency would allow you to evaluate enemy strength more exactly, too. Build it.

You must build your infrastructure, markets, factories – all that buildings allow you to outproduce the AI, especially at this level.

Without this, you will produce only military units and useless wealth wasted to support them, and still lag behind.

1.) more markets
2.) more factories
3.) more mines, less irrigation
4.) more workers
5.) switch to communism
6.) no more military units
7.) read cracker's article on opening moves and terrain evaluation

also take a look at my latest Deity try (I think I will win this time):
Infrastructure and production are my power, not numerical military strength.

I'm going to grab this game tonight and implement Longsac's suggestions and report back.

This ought to be fun.

Good suggestions Sac. Every last one of 'em.

Had a look at it - scrap it. This is either ptw or VC3, so forget switching Govs. Longasc's points about Economy are completely valid; however, it's too late to change substantial anything here. In c3c, you could switch to Communism and reach Domination, here the AI will launch before you can achieve that...
And btw, researching SynFibres without knowing Rocketry is pointless - no MAs without Aluminium.

As a general rule of thumb, once a city is producing 15+ commerce per turn, then it's good and ready for a marketplace.

Besides that, don't scrap the game! :( That's no fun! at least go down fighting! :ar15:

@Longasc, I downloaded your save too (just for fun). And noticed something, A diety player using governers?!? shame on you! :nono:

 Flintlock, you have a point, but I am always too lazy to check many cities and to assign specialists according to need.

But as you can see, it all depends on the starting phase. And I am micromanaging every citizen in the beginning. I would do this also if I would be having serious trouble. :crazyeye:

BTW, I have never won on Deity before -

but I think I will win this time. The starting position (big island, river, ressources and noone else besides me on it!) and the map choice plus the appropriate Civ for this setting made things considerably easier than a completely random start.

I doubt I could win only half of the random starts on Demigod, and even less on Deity.

The early game is the key to victory - and this is why I always recommend cracker's article about the opening and early worker management. Bamspeedy's article how to create a settler factory is useful, too.

I have no research because i get more income and buy the techs for a cheaper price than if i research or is it better to research myself.

Also wouldn't it be expensive to build more improvement as the upkeep cost is high?

How come no more military units, other civs are starting to invade me?

Thanks for the advice.

Marketplaces and banks are going to bring in a LOT more revenue than they will cost for upkeep. Factories won't, but you've gotta have factories. It's all about production.

Besides that, don't scrap the game! That's no fun! at least go down fighting!

Playing on until an AI launches, or wins by histograph is neither fun nor educational.
If this would be c3c, I'd fully agree to try to change the tides. But with the crappy Communism and the last SS Parts a lot earlier pre-c3c, it's simply pointless.
He completely lacks economical+research+production base. Not enough Artillery, too many unimproved tiles.

I have no research because i get more income and buy the techs for a cheaper price than if i research or is it better to research myself.
See it that way: If you'd have only a strong Economy (Markets and Banks everywhere, Stock Exchanges in most cities), better buy.
If you'd have only Libraries and Universities everywhere, with some Research Labs and a few SCI Wonders, better research.
But face it, you have neither of them. :(
(In general, you should be able to self-research from Mid-Industrial; trade Techs for Techs then)
How come no more military units, other civs are starting to invade me?
You could easily repell all AI landings with a lot less units, but more Artillery.

May I really strongly advice to download some saves from Regent/Monarch SGs, and have a look at them? True, you'll have to dig a bit for pre-c3c ones, but it is worth it.

Don't worry i have C3C thanks for the advice, ill really take the point about banks and marketplaces.

hello again,

i started another game with a few of the suggestions you gave me. playing france in the modern age with 4 civs left once again and coming third this time. i included a savegame.

thanks

Is this a modded game, isn't it?
Republic gives no free unit support from cities, and each unit only costs one per turn, radar artillery have only one move per turn,
even in pre-C3C that wasn't true :hmm:

Besides that, I don't have much advice, just automate those workers (they can clear pollution w/o screwing anything up)...
...oh, and
Spoiler :
Germany declares war :p

Alright, this game is getting really wierd,
but it's fun ^^
I couldn't help but keep playing, and am currently invading Persia, when something strange happened. When bombarding with huge stacks of artillery i just hit 'b' and then click the target square. After doing this about 20 times, I accidentaly jerked the mouse, out of range, and clicked (I was doing this really fast). And, the thing bombards anyway, this was something like 5 TILES OUT OF RANGE!?!, and the bombardment was sucessful!!! :twitch: It was really wierd, anyway I forgot to hit 'prtscrn' (which is a bit far from 'b'). But, I tried this again later, and got the same thing, this time only 3 tiles away, though, and the bombardment was unsucessful. Although, I did manage to hit Print Screen! :smug:
And got this wierd image...

I played the game with vanilla Civ3 and the latest patch v1.29f and no modifications. The bombard thing you're talking about is the bug i think, but i thought they fixed it with the latest patch?!

By the looks of it you really took the game by the throat. DId you have any trouble with Germany's naval/amphibious assaults?

Also is there anything i could improve on in the game?

Germany's navy was sunk early on, so their amphibious units weren't that much of a problem. They were forced to keep them on land, and used them against the paratroopers I dropped.

As far as improving the game, it's time to stop building artillery ;). I often found that I could bombard city down to under size six, with all the units redlined. But, had no more free MAs to attack with. Really frustrating :ack:

Glad to hear you're having fun.

By the looks of it the game is still winnable but i thought Germany and Persia had an MPP?!!??

India's definitely gonna be a pain to conquer.

How's my city placement?

Germany declared war on Persia (or mayby it was the other way around, I don't remember) so their MPP was canceled, and that wasn't a problem. :ar15:

Some of your cities are a bit too close. Besides that, I use CxxC mehself, so not much of a problem there

I wasn't aware that it was already known :(. But, I have perfected it :mischief: thus destroying Persia's oil source all the way on the other side of their continent! :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

Nice work there Flintlock. :goodjob:

Since this game is winnable better start a new one to practise more.

Thanks!
