As someone who has never used mods before I'm wondering what happens if I have added one or more to the game and then Firaxis download a patch. Would it invalidate the mods, mess up the game or what?

That would depend on the content of the mod and the content of the patch, a modder can try to code for maximum compatibility, but he must always assume that any patch could break his mods in unexpected ways.

no, in the worst case you'll just have to deactivate some mods.

Mods are saved completely separately from the game itself, as long as you don't activate them in the menu they can't mess up anything.

Excellent, thanks for the info. For some reason my thoughts turned to mods while I was watching the game's AI in the current streams.

From memory, civ5 patches rarely caused impact to most mods in comparison to other moddable games like EU4 or Minecraft which always seem to break mods with every patch. IIRC, the biggest impact to civ5 patching tended to be mods that used custom DLLs (C++ modding).

But in saying that, the CFC community seems to have a good ability to quickly get things working again in little time. Of course, it does help to have a few resident gurus on the forum who are quick to highlight changes and mentor fellow modders.
