Relics. Am I that unlucky?

I didn't run across a single relic in my recent game and I'm at about 1200AD. It seems so unlikely that I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong?

I've heard that they come from the tribal huts (makes sense) and also apparently from Apostles (do they just spawn at the same time as the unit is created?).

How is it possible that these are so hard to come by?

You get them if an apostle with the Martyr promotion dies in religious combat. The Mont St Michel wonder gives all your apostles this promotion.

You can get them in goody huts. It's happened to me twice so far at about 50 hours in game. You'll definitely have more slots for relics than relics themselves, unless you're playing Kongo who can't build holy sites and therefore won't get slots from his temples.

If you are a suzereign of a certain CS, you get them when you find Natural Wonders as well.

yup, plenty of ways to get them, but mostly it's just from choosing to martyr murder your own apostles.

Hey don't feel bad, the only relic I ever got so far was when Montezuma invaded me, and I crushed his invasion force, he offered peace and one of the terms was to give me his relic lol.
