Religion. Founding multiple religions

Yes, it spoils relations beetwen you and some nations. However AI's should be less likely to exchange advances and you have more time to collect culture.

To elaborate: on cultural victory it is good to have all the temples and monasteries you can get from lots of different religions. The big win is cathedral-like buildings (stupa, mandir, mosque, ...) which give +50% to culture each.

Which leads me to ask: when someone else founds a religion, are there ways to encourage them to spread to your own cities? As far as I know all you can do is give Open Borders and wait -- and only for religion-founders on your own contient. Or do they spread via coastal cities too?

Religions can jump continents. All that is required is a trade route. Religions have a miniscule chance of being spread spontaneously from any city to any other city with which it has a trade route. It doesn't happen much, but I have had a religion that I founded jump 1/2 way around the world just from trade routes. So it can happen that a religion on another continent will find its way to your territory. You can also do it the hard way, which is take an invasion force and go capture a city with that religion, make a few missionaries yourself, and take matters into your own hands.

Oh so If I went to hinduism then researched Judasim I could change it so all my cities followed Judasim. I think lol
No, you must still spread it with missionaries. Change to a religion don't automatically convert your cities to it.

Founding multiple religions is needed when attempting for Cultural Victory. I'm not saying about culture, but about process setting your rivals one against the another. If there is lot of arguing beetwen them they're less willing to trade technologies and the whole process of geting close to build Apha Centauri is much slowed and you have more time to collect culture. In my previous (China) game I regreted that I had found one religion only.

Example: there are three nations: you, Rome and Japan. Send buddist missionaries to Rome and hindu missionaries to Japan. Is not it simple?
Mmh, Sneaky.

But multiple religions are good even for culture, under free religion you get culture for ALL the religions in your cities. with this tactic (multiple religion not "divide et impera" I almost win a cultural victory around 2010 under Warlord, and I was not even planning for it. It was a huge surprise when the first of my cities gone Legendary. :)
