Religion without names?

I was thinking about this even before the details for Civ4 came out, and I was quite disappointed. Wouldn't it be better to name your own religions? Then there wouldn't be the confusion and gripe about religions that aren't in...religions that are...
Religions, as it seems, are pretty much very mechanical. Meaning, every single religion works the exact same way. So, why not let religions be named? How does "Christianity" differe than "Bob Sagetism"? In the game mechanics, none whatsoever.
AI could still conform to pre-built names. New religions discovered by AI should be named randomly according to a certain list (Buddhism, Islam, Christianity...).

ive always liked the idea of establishing your religion based of the "big five" fraxis has come up with...but then allowing the civics type options for the mechanics of that religion.

Well unfortunately they took out naming your own Civ and Leader in Civ 3 (which I really miss... I liked seeing MY name on the Hall of Fame), so I doubt that changing the name of religion in game is going to happen (although they do let you change the name of individual units and cities still.)

Changing the name of the religion is also like changing the name of techs, unit types, or buildings in the game though so I seriously doubt they would do it.

@krikkitone: you can change your civ and leader name in Civ 3.. when you're loading a game, after selecting the civ with traits you want, click on the box under the leaderhead and you can change all the details.

As for religions with different options, I think that would be a much better way to implement it. At least we can be assured that with the civics engine in the game, the ability to make religion operate that way is kinda in the game already... maybe (and unfortunately) in an expansion?

Religions with distinct features have been avoided for reasons :(

With Meleagerism I will not only be the ruler of my people...
...but their god as well. :jesus:

since you CAN change almost every name (civ, leader, cities, units) I'm almost sure you can change the name of the religion when you discover it. OTOH, of course you will have to live with the symbol of the religion you discover... ;)

@MSTK: But surely it is less offensive if all religions start out equal, and then the PLAYER selects different features... Or, maybe each civ starts out with their own primitive religious beliefs, and as you discover the religious techs, you get a civics-like option that you can choose to use? yeah, yeah, I know.. too late to implement it like that... :P

I couldn't have said it in a better way..I totally agree with you...if you were the first to "discover" a religion you should be able to name it.
