I just had a thought...

If you discover a religion as the first one, then you get a city in which it grows from. What if you, as the first one, research them all or just two. Would these religions work against each other or what choices do you get?

Maybe many religions creates more religious doubt and a secular society?

Looks at Spain (Catholic vs. Islam) and England (Catholic vs. Anglican/Puritan) which demonstrate that internal-religious problems are more hazardous than external ones opitimised by Richard vs. Saladin.

If multiple religions are bad, then one would avoid researching some of the inventions... hmm im confused... Cant wait to get my fingers on Civ IV - then I'll know :crazyeye:

I guess you will only be able to found a religion once per game and that's it... Would be the best way to handle it IMO.

Maybe the techs needed to found a religion will be seperate form much of the tech tree. That way, you could choose not to research a tech for a religion you don't want without suffering any penalties for not researching it. Also, this would better allow you to choose the religion you want to found. Hehe, Catholic Theocracy, here I come.

However in one of the preview threads it has already been speculated from the screen shots that religions are gained with existing techs...i.e. Hinduism from Polytheism and Islam from Code of Laws....

How about the reverse...if you found a religion then a tech or wonder or skill you may have already learned or built may be anethama to that religion so you lose it; for example if your religion believes science contradicts the beliefs of your faith (kinda like today's debate over Darwinism)...then maybe you lose Darwin's Theory of Evolution wonder or something; ....or choose a communistic form of civic and loose all religion....

Holy wars would be nice.

Rather than attacking a nation's religious capital and getting a holy war going, it should be, that if you desecrate the holy site, both religious sects of the nation immediately.

As in Internal fighting, as well as a possible chance, of any nation that is that religion, will go to war with eachother.......a sorta dogpile effect, over religion.

As for the too religious thing......that's not true.

I can't speak for all religions, but Judaism doesn't have anything against Evolution, so why should it, also be effected? And communism the same thing.....technically you can have Communism and religion.

Never said it should --- of coarse in the game it is said all religions are equal and 'generic' - so Judiasm is the same as Daoism or Hinduism or Christianity or Islam.

Not in pure Marxist communism - Marx's dogma was totally against religion. He called it the 'opiate of the masses', an institution cynically designed and controlled by the ruling bourgeoisie to keep the masses of the downtrodden proletariat under control.

Hmmm, these are all some pretty good ideas. I hope the guys at Firaxis sit around and debate like this. Religion is a touchy subject, so I'm real interested in seeing how it works. Catholic Theocracy, here I come. Ciao.

You know, I hope that now that they have religion in the game, I do hope that we will see it developed even more over subsequent expansions.
For instance, having a choice of religions to found if you get the required tech first (perhaps only one civ per culture group can found a religion of a particular type) and the ability for religions to aquire-and lose/change-'Traits' over time, in order to make the religions less generic, whilst also avoiding offending peoples sensibilities by pigeonholeing different real-world religions.

Yours,

I'm not jewish, but I think that Judaism states that god created man and animals. Theory of evolution of course states that the more developed fauna has evolved from single cell organisms without any divine intervention.

This is civ IV discussion, not a theological debate.

I can explain it to you if you want, just PM me if so.
