Is it possible to rename a unit in Civ 3 such as a ship. That would make it a lot more easier telling the difference between transports when I am trying to load units onto them.

Not that I know of unless it becomes an elite unit that makes an army, but I dont think naval units can do that.

Sure you can, at least in Conquests. If you have vanilla, sorry about your luck. I can say that when ship-chaining, the bottom of the list has the boats that were there longest.

In Conquests, you can rename a unit by first clicking on it to highlight it, then look at the rows of control buttons below it. You should have a button showing that has ABC on it. Click on that, and a box will appear asking if you want to rename the unit. Type your new name in the box. In the case of transports, you might simply want to label them with numbers, starting at 1.

I have gotten into renaming units, mainly ones that I have done something extra with, such as Golden Argosy, a curragh that successfully circumnavigated the large continent that I am on, surviving several privateer attacks, the Army of Templars, that successfully stormed Tenochtitlan, bringing down the hated Aztec power, Nassau's Lancers, an Ancient Cavalry unit that wrought death and destruction among the barbarians, and the Swiss Mercenary Army of the Cantons, that brought great woe to the overbearing Incas.

Or if you don't have that click shift-n when you click it.

Ok. Thanks. I'll try that. That'll sure save a lot of time going through every single transport to see if it has already moved or not when I'm loading units onto them.

I always rename my ship units, it helps when you're in the military advisor screen trying to locate a task group of frigates. When you name them you only have to look for one of the ships you remember being in that fleet.

I usually try to name the ships using historical names as best as I can remember them, Santa Maria for Spain, Golden Hind for England, etc. It adds a bit of flavour to the game and it's pretty exciting when one of your elite vessels sinks several enemy vessels, because you have named the ship you can keep track of which ones were the most victorious.

I usually name Armies too, for the same reason. It makes it easier to find the one you want when you have several armies in the military advisor screen if they're all named as 1st Infantry, 2nd Airborne, etc etc.
