In an internet game via Gamespy, how do I replace a human with the AI? The other player can't play anymore, and I'd like to finish the game out. When I load the game now, it won't let me end my turn--I assume it is waiting for him.

My friend and I have the same issue, when one of us isn't doing well, we allow the other person to save and keep playing alone.

With 3.13 (including with the official patch), it still doesn't work.

I think that instead of abandoning the game, the loser must retire so that the game can continue for anybody else.

Try Saveconvert 4.2 by Gyathaar.

I don't know if this program works with Warlords or BTS, but it's worth a shot.

We successfully used it in a vanilla game I am hosting.

This is the writeup of instructions provided for me by Ruff_Hi:

You can do this with saveconvert - I have done it in another game.

Info on how to use saveconvert.

1) copy saveconvert.exe to a directory
2) copy the save you want to convert to that directory (I would suggest you use the save that someone sent you to play).
3) run saveconvert.exe (this is a dos based program so it will load in a little black box and have prompts that you need to respond to) - the rest is from memory so it might be wrong or off - prompts are pretty good
4) it asks for the name of the save to convert - type in name (I usually rename the save after step 2 above to something like a.civ4savegame (extension is not important) - you can just reply 'a' and it will cycle thru vanilla and then warlords extensions automatically looking for the save
5) after it has loaded the save it asks '# of civs' question - I just hit return
6) then you get a full on menu with all the things you can change - select the one that changes player (not sure of name)
7) it then lists the players ... country / leader and if AI or Human - swap Japan to Human
8) hit exit (or -1 or enter) until you exit the program - the last prompt asks for the output file name - this is the converted save - you can then rename it to something appropriate, play your turn and then send it on.

when you load the game up, minus the other huan players, it should take you to the vote screen asking you what you want to do. If you select save and continue it will drop the human players and replace them with AI players.

Maybe there is something else going on here. No matter how I open the game, I cannot end my turn. The other (ex) human player shows up as being played by the AI. I can move troops around, but hitting <ENTER> to end the turn, or clicking on the red circle has no effect. ???

Did you set a turn timer when you created the game? if so, just set and wait for the time to run out and it will start a new turn.

I'm hoping that the player can then re-join at the following session and take back control from the AI?

Assuming the "Take over AI" option is enabled of course...

I'll have to test this at our game this week.
