I have seen alot of thread being moderated recently, and in the debate concerning free speach for fascists below, the case has been argued that no poster reported the thread to moderators.

Now my question. When I pry my fingers away from the keyboard and supress my urge to type a kick ass answer and instead report the post to a moderator, am I doing the right thing, or am I used a boring poster that whines to the boss?

I would appriciate an answer to any reports I make, just to learn the when and when not to report a thread...

cheers:goodjob:

When you feel that you should report a thread to a moderator you should not hold back in doing so just because you are afraid to be considered a whiner. You should just report the thread and then it's up to the moderator to do something about the thread or not.

And make sure that you explain in the report what the problem is. The mods get e-mailed with the report, but don't get the text of the offending post. They just get a link to it, so the more info you give them the better (if for example, they get the e-mail at work or similar, it helps them decide on how quickly they need to act).

I've been getting a lot of thread reports. Some are trivial. Some are important. I focus initially on the ones where several people have reported problems in the same thread. Then I work through them all. They are all looked at even if I decide to take no action.

The more detail that is included in your report the better I am able to prioritise.

It is always better to resist the urge to insult someone who has just insulted you. If you ignore flamings, respond calmly, making relevant points and arguments, it is the other person who looks stupid.

So yes - you are doing the right thing.

All of them as far as I know.

Ah - it only seems like I was getting them all then. Thanks Padma. ;)

Sometimes, Padma and I wind up reading it at the same time, and editing the same post. That's when you should really take note. ;)

Interesting.
What happens when two moderators edit the same post at the same time?

I think there's either a lot of cursing or laughing done in front of two computers in the US..... ;)

Not just the US - we have global coverage now.

:hmm: That means...

So you and Chieftess have a very civilised
crowd of posters on the Civ3 fora... :D
Since col is a mod, that is.

... or they're just too lazy to report something and are not well behaved at all...

99.9% of the time it's laughter. :D

The *last* edit to take place is what displays. This is what usually clues us in to the concurrent edit, e.g., I edit a post & save changes, but when I view the post, it shows Chieftess' edit. We normally PM/chat with each other to resolve any differences, and the final edit is usually "signed" by both of us.

It means he is receiving *all* Reported posts from OT, not just a subset. But so are the other OT mods.

Actually, in Civ3, I don't think I've had a day go by without at least one reported post. Usually 3 or 4. Sometimes 10-12. Plus, I patrol the forums aggressively, and often catch problems before they are reported.

I often get folk reporting things directly to me via MSMessenger when they can see that I'm on line or via PM - and like Padma I like to try and catch problems before they happen. Often the 'trouble' spots can be anticipated. ;)

Especially threads that have the word "France" in the title. :mischief:

I've seen a few go downhill quick (not just France, but threads lke "Top 5 cities in RL" quickly disolved into a political debate in the early morning hours.

Not all threads mind you.

I just started a ‘Greatest Movie Villains’ thread in OT. In that we have a thread devoid of nation-bashing and political trolling. :)

But if, God forbid, some angry poster could actually manage to turn that into a trollish political debate/war, I’m buying ice-cream for everyone in the CFC staff.

Seriously if someone actually did that, I would be very surprised.

:crazyeye:
I was thinking col thought he'd get all reported posts from any forum on CFC.
Then you explained it's just OT report posts, but you said also col did receive all reported posts. I was assuming here, that you didn't get any reports from the civ3 fora meanwhile... (so all reported posts were from OT).
:crazyeye:
You know we have relative high temperatures and almost 100% humidity over here today, blame it on the weather...

I didn't expect it's that high on civ3. Ok, some topics like "what new civs in the new expansion and what not" or such seem to cause trouble automatically.
Anyway, you both make a good job there! :goodjob:

Thanks. :D

Most of the trouble in the Civ3 forums can be divided into 3 areas: Nation-bashing, profanity, and piracy. We do also have occasional personality conflicts between posters, and spam, and even the occasional porn post.

Actually, part of why you probably didn't expect those numbers is because CT & I do jump on those thing right away, so they rarely get the opportunity to build very much.
