Hi,

In the game I'm currently playing my government type is "Monarchy", however, I want to switch to republic to make more money.

I have a large number of units, and monarchy helps me to maintain that army allowing me (2town/4city/8metrop).

As you should know, republic only allows you (1town/3city/4metro) but it produces one extra piece of gold for every square already producing one. So I will have to pay for almost all my units, but as I will produce one extra gold per square, that will help me to maintain the army.

My question is, is that true ? If you look into the Civilization 3 Conquests civilopedia (1.22 version) it says nothing about one extra gold piece for every square already producing one, but if you look into the Civ3Conquests Reference pdf file, it says that thing about the extra gpt.

Could anyone explain this ? thanks.

Republic and democracy do in fact get the extra commerce bonus. Any tile producing at least one gold under monarchy will produce an extra gold under democracy republic. Switch over to republic you'll see the difference. BTW if you are planning to be at war for a while then Republic may not be for you because of the war weariness. But for short wars and a mostly peaceful playing style Republic is a great government.

Ok, thanks.

Btw, I'm playing as the romans and I'm willing to switch to fascism as soon as possible ... Never tried it, sounds good.

Fascism is a good government for going to war, or building up your infrastructure(workers work a 200%). So if you're planning a war it might be a good shoice.

Is that new in Conquests? The Republic supporting units (though a minimal amount)? In vanilla civ3 I know it supports none at all.

yes, that's new. but every unit costs 2gpt instead of 1gpt in republic - that's new, too!

Actually it's not exactly "new" - the options have been available to change it like that from the start - but it hasn't been defaulted that way before. I don't know whether I like Republic like that, though - I prefer it the original way. What about Democracy, is that 2gpt too? I hope not!!!

Democracy is still 0 free units, 1gpt upkeep.

trust ur instincts. Ur Rome. Republic is a good choice. get them legions built up , and go for as much gold as u can. Then annihilate ur neighbors with ur legions.

Personally, I never go Fascism and find it to be a pretty useless government unless you're going for a Conquest victory (since you tend to destroy alot of cities). Republic all the way baby, I've never had one unhappy citizen due to war weariness while in a Republic even in all-wartime games.

I find that as long as I get a bunch of my cities above 6 pop, I can wage war just fine. I do this thing where I limit myself to having to pay 24 gpt for military support while under Republic, dunno why I chose that number but its working for me. :)
