Request AI to name units

It would be a nice touch if the AI would name all units. These need be nothing more than 32nd Inf Div, or 3rd (name of city of origin) rifle regiment. This has nothing to do with gameplay but would add a deal of flavor. I get tired of 'you have destroyed an enemy Rifleman' messages. Named units could be recognized and tracked over the course of the game. Perhaps it is because I am a history student but the generic names for all units seems quite colorless and boring. Surely this would be something easy to code for the AI?

In the historical mods I am very surprised that the AI does not name enemy units. After all these are Historical mods. In Civ3 the enemy units were named in the Pacific War mod; why was this dropped?

definitely a nice touch.

I'd love if it would automatically do that for ALL civs, AI and Human.

So 1st Warrior Div., etc...

Cool idea - I'm for it.

Why was it dropped? I'll tell you why--because the stupid worldbuilder resets the names of your units once you save it. When I converted WWII in the Pacific from Civ 3 to Civ 4, I named all the units just as you suggested. Then when I saved it, they all magically disappeared. If someone would like to tell me how to get around this, I'd be perfectly happy to redo it.

A side note: the reason the AI does not normally name its units has to do with the XML setup. You can, if you want, define unique names for every unit--like 1st Marine Division, 2nd Marine Division, etc., in Civ4UnitInfos. They are simply blank right now (excluding Great People) so that's why you don't see names. There are also several good Python mods out there to do unit naming based on city or unit type.

Might it not allow cheating- easy to keep tabs on their production etc.? If they've got the 49th cavaliers, you know to pack pikes...

Would the fact that it was a horse in the first place not give that away?

I usually rename my units manually because I'm a dork and I like that kind of stuff...but AI named units would be neat too...I'm not a fan of the numbered system for the reason mentioned above. I don't want to know what they have unless I earn it through scouting or espionage. But some AIs build tons of units...they'd run out of names pretty quickly, no?

I like the numbered system. If someone has a problem with it, they can always manually edit the number. Like add a 0 to the end and watch your opponent crap their pants.

Would the fact that it was a horse in the first place not give that away?

I think the point he's making is that you know he has 49 cavalry units!! :mischief:

Here is one such renamer, by Jeckel: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=178107

Note that these are mostly geared toward military units (though I think some of the workers and settlers get renamed, too); however, if you are looking for a Great Person renamer, you'd best wait until I finish my updated Python mod for CSGP. :D

I think Jeckel's mod also allows for dynamic/randomized city naming, so you don't always get the Washington -> New York -> Boston sequence when playing as America, for example. Makes things interesting. There's also a mod somewhere (may not be this one) that names units based on what city they come from, so you might get things like "1st London Infantry Brigade."

Can't you rename AIs units with ctrl z?

That would be a very nice effect to the game. Imagine

While defending, your 13th Longbowmen Division has destroyed a 4th Knight Platoon.

I would very much like that

One thing I find annoying is the sentance formation- it's not a 3rd Garosel Rifles, it's the 3rd Garosel Rifles!
