I've started working on converting Rhye's default world map into something smaller. Right now I'm just taking the screen shot he posted elsewhere, dropped it into photoshop and am painting over the terran features so I can reconvert it into a map.

But I had a thought. Since Rhye made the thing initially, he has all the original .bmp files, which would make it MUCH easier to convert the map. So Rhye, could you post the .bmp files for the world map? Or if you're feeling generous just do a version of it that is comfortable for 7 players?

I would like to see a smaller Earth map too. I mentioned it in Rhye's Earth Map thread but I don't think I got a response:

At the moment, I have been attempting to make a Small-sized Earth map. I'm trying to use the BMP to WBS converter. I found an old pic of a CIV1 Earth map for guidance. I'm also using Rhye's new CIV4 map.

I'm wondering if it's possible to reverse-engineer Rhye's CIV4 Earth map into it's component Height, Terrain, Feature, etc. BMP maps. From there I could shrink the BMPs in Photoshop, do some minor editing to clean it up. Can you post the BMPs that you used to make your map?

I was using the converter to try to make a smaller world map since my machine cannot really handle the big one past 1500 or so.

The problem is that if you make it much smaller it becomes impossible to make Europe a decent size even if you oversize it a bit relative to the rest of the world. It also becomes impossible to have much accuracy.

I think that something like an 84 x 52 map would only work if Europe was only given one or two Civs (not including Russia).

So I have begun to work on an Europe map that includes North Africa and goes about half way into current day Iran. It is based on a map that was made for some WWII board game.

It would be nice if Ryle could upload his bit-maps.

I intend to use the small map for randomly placed 3 or 4 civs. I'm not going for historical accuracy. I just want the Mediterranian Sea to where it's supposed to be. I don't really care about the details of Italy, Greece, Crete, etc.

Incidentally, I'd like to see a Small- or Tiny-sized Mediterranean map. There's a nice one that comes with the game but it's TOO LARGE for my computer.

I asked, he said they are proprietary information. Plus it doesn't look like he'll be making a smaller map himself, so I'm going to see what I can do with it. I just need to figure out how to get the damn converter to work properly.

I think an 84 x 52 world map would be good, and its what I"m shooting for (though I want to at least get the damn thing to open once so I can take a look at it first, maybe a bit larger will still suit my purposes). 1-2 civs in Europe is plenty when there are only 7 or so civs total.

Of course of those 1-2 civs I want them to have decent room and not squish into like 2-3 cities each. But I've got no example to look at, so I'm really itching to get the program working.

If you've got any ideas on how to avoid the "you have been defeated" message after loading a map, please let me know.

Apple - Mods can feel free to move this if they like.

The map I'm working on is 64 x 40 tiles. It's classified as "small" and best suited for 5 players.

I'm going to follow the general format of the "terra" option in the custom game menu. It starts the five civs in an "old world" continent and leaves a "new world" empty.

I'll try to make a version that permits random placement. (I have no idea how that will be done. It's just an idea.) And I'll make a version with preset civ placement. Perhaps with China, India, Egypt, Rome and Mali. If there was a Mesopotamian civ I'd have that too. And perhaps Ethiopia, maybe.

I agree. Please move this thread to the proper forum.

I was getting that message too for a while.

I stopped having all mountains when I made sure that there were no blank spaces in the bit maps when I coloured them in. It is only necessary to do a height and terrain maps. For the terrain map I just colour the whole thing green and place the terrains myself in the World Builder.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

The terrain map is required? Rhye's guide said that only the height map was required, so that is all I was using.

Hmm... maybe that caused the problem.

I think the 'you have been defeated' message is a result of the information in the wbs file before the actual map data section of the file. I've had maps that were all mountain or all water work after I did the following.

I save a custom game with the rules I wanted and the Civs I wanted. I then copied the all the information before the line that says begin map. This I pasted in the WBS file of the map I was making. This seemed to clear up the 'you have been defeated' situation for me. That may not be the easiest way but it works.
