I'm playing at the Warlord level and when I start out things go great. I get about 5 or more cities, build lots of wonders, etc. but around the indurtrial era things start to go wrong. It seems like all of a sudden the AI gets a ton of technologies very quickly and then overpowers me.

Any tips on this problem?

Are you researching Computers early enough? You'll want the labs to keep up later on - especially in a OCC.

Edit: Sorry.. industrial era. You are building libraries/universities, right? Keep an eye on the production tiles of your cities and improve the commerce gains on them if you're falling behind in research (using cottages, for example). The earlier you build cottages the better gains you'll get from them later on (since they upgrade after a certain number of turns). If your research slider is falling from 100%, you really need to find out why and correct it if you can.

Depends. Any more info you could provide (or savegames) would help. There are a few blind suggestions that could help (assuming you're not already doing them):

1) Don't automate workers. At Warlord it works fine, but you'd be better off doing it yourself to learn and to prioritize.

2) Trade techs like crazy. It builds relationships and helps you catch up on techs you skipped (even though it helps the AI too).

3) Selectively build structures in cities. If you're building a lot of wonders, which is way fun, you might be missing out on key structures, like banks, markets, granaries, etc.

4) A good military always helps. Sure, it would slow down building important units, but it would help you kick out your neighbors and maybe sue for peace + techs.

Again, more info = more help. Good luck.

I keep up with my buildings well and don't automate my workers. I don't have a funding problem...wait, I usually have my research at 80% and my culture at 20%. Is that my problem?

If you're having research problems, chances are you don't want to be pumping culture into your cities. Unless of course your citizens are really unhappy, but I don't think I've ever used the culture slider except when I press for a culture victory later in the game (in which case I throw it to 100% culture).

If you have your research at 80%, the other 20% should be keeping you afloat cash-wise. If you have enough cash to support 100% research, you need to either run at 100% research or (if you have a 7-8+ gpt surplus) settle another city if possible (or take one).

1) First of all how big is your map. 5 cities on small is ok, but it is really really low on standart(10+) or large(15+).

2) Do you have plenty of cottages. At this time you should have at least 1 city making at least 200 sp and some other cities making 100+.

3) Did you trade tech with AI?

4) You only bet is to get Internet first. In this case you could get all the techs the AI is having ;). (but it is very very expensive)
