Im a techie, so I always try and get my hands on anything that will speed up my research.

and what dont you care for...

The techs I dont care for are techs that are blank like PHYSICS and CHEMISTRY.

and so jus get in trading?

I'll trade any tech for any tech. Unless the tech i'm giving gives too much of an advantage such as any that allows you to build a peice of a spacecraft. Or FISSION.

Depends a lot on what level of game you are playing, who the other tribes are and what your starting traits are.

In general, it's a good idea to get pottery early to build the granary to help creating settlers in your capital. If you happen to have alphabet as a starting tech, then writing is a good choice as the AI values this tech. The same is true of iron working. In Conquests, quite few people head for Code of Laws and the Philosophy to get Republic as a bonus (this normally won't work on the top levels Diety & Sid).

Aside from that, there are way too many factors to consider to have a set path.

Example: If you're on an island, you'll probably need to bee-line to map making to be able to build galleys to transport your settlers to other islands.

On the other hand if you're on a panagea, you might want the wheel to find horses or bronze working to start you towards iron working.

At the lower levels (monarch and below), you'll probably be doing a lot of the research for yourself. At the higher levels (emperor and up) you'll be better off trading for most of your techs.

If you have a proscribed victory choice (Peaceful: 20K Culture, Space or UN vs Warlike Conquest/Domination), then your path may also be quite different.

In general, try to select something that will help you now, whether it's a new improvement, government or unit or whether it's something you can get the AI to trade something to you for.

first age:

This is the conquest forum so i assume Concuests us played :)

If you play at a difficulty level where with your skill you can beat the AI to the republic slingshot, do so:

research alpha-writing-code of laws-philosophy.
If you are first to get philo, you get a free tech. Take republic, it is the most expensive tech in AA.

If you can start with writing, decent or good players should be able to do this up to at least emperor. Higher than that you need a good start and some luck.
If you must start with alphabet, it is a little more difficult, but still possible up to emperor.

If you play at a difficulty level where you are not able to do this, you can either choose to go for research at minimum or even none at all, using the money to buy and trade some techs after they are known by multiple civ's.

Or you could go for philosophy without code of laws first and then take a tech that is usefull for you. Trade writing the turn before you get philosophy to have acces to more techs. Basically take the free tech a tech that no AI has so you can trade it away.

Literacy is a tech that the AI is not very likely to research. This can sometimes be a decent choise for you to research therefore. For getting it free from philosophy not really though, usually you can get a more valuable tech. (unless the AI has all valuable techs and lit is the only one you can get that they do not have)

After doing any of the above things, you normally can trade for iron working, horseback ridng and some religious techs.
Then it is time to research construction or currency. Currency is the least researched by the AI of those 2.

I do not agree it depends on your victory type goal. In AA, you just want to get to MA asap. The slingshot is miraculous and if impossible to do it with COL, it is still always better to research philosophy first and get whatever you want for free than to research any other tech instead of philo. (As long as you know you will get it first, so dont trade away writing until you almost have it)

Some good points WOA, but I'll disagree with the victory choice doesn't matter comment. If you are Persia/Celts/Rome and going to a military victory, you want your UU out as fast as possible. OTOH, if you're going for a cultural and are scientific, you want literature ASAP to get those libraries built. The same is true if religious and going for TOA, Oracle & Hanging Gardens on the bottom path. There are also times when you're in no hurry to get to the middle age, like if your Mounted Warriors or Gallic Swords are whomping on tribes with Knight replacement UU's.

I usually do a bee line to Philosophy and get iron working and horseback riding. This helps ensure that i'm the most advanced and i have the best army. I don't like to get both of the gov. techs, i just trade for one of them. :yeah:
