Research varying depending on what tech I choose to research?

Well... ok, but what then is the point of slowing research for those techs of the more advanced era rather than simply increasing their costs?

Because that is how the mechanism worked when I first started using it a year ago, I didn't know how to or want to ask for it to be changed.

You seem to have missed the point of my question. What is the difference between slowing research on a given era's techs and simply increasing the cost of that era's techs? And why would we apply the slowing mechanism at all when we could simply increase costs?

Nothing. I just don't want to do extra work to change it from one way to another.

So you're saying the drag modifier is a way to more quickly apply a sweeping variable change for quick adjustments to the whole era? Makes some sense I suppose.

Yes, that was the whole point of it when I discovered the tag a year ago, was to get certain eras to go faster/slower without having to manually adjust each tech cost.

I did some research on this and it turns out that the techcostmodifier tag does not work how I thought. I thought that it reduced research rates, as that is what AIAndy said a year ago, but now that I look at it myself, it looks like it actually does increase tech costs. So that explains why the eras have still been a bit off lately. I'll be committing a new erainfos file with better numbers now that I understand how it works.

As I recall, we changed it to work on the cost side because people were complaining that their research per turn in the main (top left) slider was all over the place depending on what tech they choose to research, and that was felt to be more confusing than having the costs vary.

Oh, I missed that then. At any rate, I've very belatedly changed it to work properly (again).
