We are currently researching Banking (completed in 2 turns), so we need to decide on what to start on next, our immediante choice's are:

Printing Press
Music Theory
Economics
Astronomy
Gunpowder

Printing Press
This technology as three benefits, it's cheap, easily tradeable, and allows passage to Democracy.

Music Theory
JS Bach's Cathedral, that's about it.

Economics
Gives us the ability to build Smiths Trading Company, it's also a fairly expensive tech, and has a good trade value. The wonder itself can add anywhere from 20-40gpt to our chest. (It Allows Free Banks, Marketplaces, Harbors, and Airports)

Astronomy
This tech will move us closer to being able to trade our resource's or lux's around the world, or buy from other civs.

Gunpowder
Gives us our UU.

I'd prefer to research Economics, Smiths Trading Company is one of the best wonders in the game, and if I'm thinking right it should active our Golden Age.

Once again, I don't agree with you. ;)

If we get astronomy (first), we can trade it for 3 luxuries to the new world civs. This will allow us to go 0% lux instead of 30%. This saves us 130gpt to further speed our research.

Or go for gunpowder to trigger out Golden Age via musketeers and speed research AND wonder building.

We don't want to go democracy before we have complete control of our continent, hence no printing press.

We still have plenty of time to go for economics afterwards (if nobody else does), because we are at least 20 turns from accumulating 600 shields for Smith's in Groton.

We also have time to go for music theory later, if we want to go for Bach's instead of Smith's.

PS: Smith's will NOT trigger our Golden Age. It is commercial, but we lack an industrious Great Wonder.

Astronomy doesn't allow trade over sea square's, navigation does, it gives us nothing but a new boat and a kind of useless wonder.

Correct.

Wrong. Please look at the sea between Anarchyisgodville and Samaria. You will see that the passage to the other continent is sea, not ocean. Thus with astronomy, we can trade for ivory, gems, furs, and spices. :goodjob:

ahh, didn't know there is a passage there.

I believe we should go for Astronomy. While we may not have need for the wonder, as has been stated, the tech will allow us to access needed luxes and save build time on things like temples.

Plus, we do not need any of the techs yet and the AI is not anywhere near Economics yet, so there is time to go back for it.

Hmm..I like Gunpowder becuase it gives us our UU...
But Astronomy is good too..Hard choice....I say go for astronomy..then we can trade a lot..(I love trading!! I wonder why..)

definetly gunpowder, we need to trigger out goldenage because of the 2 wonders we are building

Gunpowder - for the UU. Gives us a strong defender against knights, and should allow us to trigger our GA with perfect timing for wonders.

Hmm, if we're thinking this way, and we can build up a decent military quickly enough, another wonder-city could be interesting. Wouldn't it be nice to get Sun Tzu's, JS Bach's AND some other wonder (Leo's or one of the Science wonders, or Smith's(!))?

After Gunpowder, Music Theory (soley for JS Bach's - this tech is often ignored by the AI, so this is a great option for us!)

If we build Smith Trading Center, our GA will be actived (and we still gave plenty of time to build it, even if we do research astronomy before economics).

I argued otherwise about 10 postings ago. Please could you say why you think out GA would be triggered by Smith's?

It active's the GA of commercial civilizations, and last time I check, France is a commercial civ. (unless I'm getting traits confused)

No. You are correct. But you need wonders to meet both of your traits to start the Golden Age.
