I realised in my last game that I can resurrect dead/conquered leaders by liberating their former capital. I wonder if someone noticed a single diplomatic benefit for doing this?
I think they have to vote for you in diplomatic victory. Otherwise, no. When I resurrected Elizabeth, she was as hostile to me as when Augustus killed her off. I was tempted to kill her off again just to teach her a lesson in manners.
By the way, I didn't have to rescue her capital in order to liberate her, but I hear others saying you need to. Perhaps it works for "temporary capitals" as well (I revived the last of her cities to fall).

Glad to have someone back me up there. So, yeah, liberate their last city to fall, don't liberate their original capitol. That way they'll vote for you in diplomatic victory, but you can still win a conquest victory if you wish.
Meh, I'd only do it if going diplo, and I suck at diplo, especially in a volatile game like this, so, leave em dead.
I do often liberate city states since they ally with you for a long time if you do, and you often get some nice benefit out of it (vs another city to puppet or pay for).
I just captured the Siam capital. Do you know if someone captures it back from me, he can have the option to give it back to Siam as a gesture of good will?

I think the main reason you would liberate a captured capital is just because you can't raze capitals. It does count as conquering it for conquest victory.
There is no diplomatic benefit. The leader will be pissed at you, but there is permanent open borders and they have to vote for you - so I'm not sure they're bad manners matter.

It's impossible to suck at a diplomatic victory in this game. Just buy all the city states. That's all you have to do. You can be at war with every Civ on the planet and win the diplomatic victory thanks to buying out a few random people that make up a small portion of the planets population. Definitely the easiest victory to win.
Sometimes I'll bring them back if I'm not really looking to expand. More civs means smaller rivals, so if I see someone getting picked on and I don't want their land then I return it to them by force if my military is not otherwise occupied simply because all the land that I don't control should be divided up as much as possible.
You don't want a regional hegemon other than yourself.
