How about a retreat option?

WHen one attacked he still has the option to retreat. If he sees he is losing he can pull his troops out. This would work olny if his unit was faster if it is the same speed (movement#'s) than the other unit can chase its attacker with no movement penalty so that on its next move it can destroy the attacking unit.

Well... Civ III already has a random retreat for units that are faster....

Do you mean that you want to change it so the defender should be able to be set to retreat if it gets low in health? Or that the defender can be set to pursue the unit if it retreats (though, the attacker initially is still in an adjacent tile... this could get complicated fast).

There are so many things that could be added to Civ IV. Although this is one i had not ever considered a must it would still be a welcome addition. Afterall its always an option which could be disabled if you dont like it in your games.

Sometimes faster units do not retreat.

ie. When my cavalry attacks a spearman and he is clearly losing and about to die he sometimes does not retreat.

There should be a user controlled way to retreat the unit so it gives the feeling that your skill enabled your unit not to be destroyed. You can keep attacking also if you want to. There should be a button that you can press when you want to retreat

Thats true sometimes i dont want my unit to retreat especially if it has a poor defence value and is likely to get slaughtered next turn. I would sometimes rather just press the assault.

Ah, I gotcha. So, you order the unit to retreat when it reaches a certain amount of life? Makes sense. I could go for this.

This has been said before (by me, and probably a lot of others). The fact is that, in history, swordmen can retreat, as well as many units. There should be a retreat stat, and a anti-retreat stat. Why 2? For ranged units. The odds of a swordman escaping a cavalry unit are really bad, the odds of a swordmen escaping a spearman are fair, and the odds of a sword escaping a archer are in between.

YES, IT SHOULD BE OPTIONAL! great idea, if an attacker goes at it, you can retreat as long as health is like more than yellow

Rather than a retreat, an optional chase for units that are faster.

Retreat should be a special unit ability, not a general option.

It does sound to me as though ALL units will have a chance of retreating, with so-called 'Flanking' units having a far better chance of getting away.
