Reverse patch and Graffics/windows problem

1. I have civ4 complete. My friend has civ4 vanilla. His is unpatched and for some reason he doesn't want to patch his game (something about storage space on his computer). Is there a way for me to reverse patch my game so that we will be able to use multiplayer? Complete comes pre-patched so I cannot just reinstall it. Thanks
2. Recently, when I use my game it has started minimizing for no reason. I didn't press alt-tab or the windows key but it just minimizes. Last time it started doing this, it began to minimize more and more often until it would minimize, then the game would come back up again, then just as the game came back up it would minimize again. eventully, the only way to even exit the game was to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then close out of the game that way. I use Vista. Last time this started happening, I had to completely uninstall the game and then reinstall it. Does anyone know what happened? Thank you.

Civ 4 Vanilla is not compatible (ie: won't work at all) with Vista unless it is fully patched. You'll just have to work on your friend to patch his version.

I have a vague memory of reading something about your second problem, but not a good enough memory to be of any help. If I remember or find something I'll post again.
