Aside from personal satisfaction, is there anything we can offer our citizens as a reward for doing good things for the game? Can we do anything to discourage doing bad things for the game, short of kicking people out if the break forum rules too often? I'd like to think we can come up with something, just as exist in RL.

You might be asking, good for the game? Bad for the game? What in the world am I talking about?

Good
  • Story telling
  • Staying in character
  • Keeping an awareness of what will further our interests in the civ game, without being overbearing
  • Taking election, polling, and debate losses in good sport
  • Playing a role, up to but not beyond the point of causing problems
Bad
  • Personal conflicts from taking roles overboard
  • Going out of character, taking others out of character
  • Losing awareness of the civ game, taking the civ game to places which are bad for role play or lead to our demise
  • Being a sore loser
So, is the :old: man off his rocker, or can this be developed into something useful?

We do need a honor system, and the only way to do this is through History of the Game, which must be official, as well as through the naming of cities, units, landmarks as well as renaming of Great People or Wonders.
We also need a fair mechanism to decide on what is good or bad deeds, aside from normal moderation.

Good topic.

I think we can decide on

the best narrative for the term
the best in-character game personality of the term (new person each term)
the best complete and independent strategy proposal for the term
the best political campaigning for an election
the best compromiser of the term

Bad
  • Personal conflicts from taking roles overboard

I think we can decide on:

the worst narrative for the term
the worst in-character game personality of the term (new person each term)
the worst complete and independent strategy proposal for the term
the worst political campaigning for an election
the worst troublemaker for the term

All these should be decided in private polls, so individuals do not trade favors and so on or fear reprisals.

Rewards:

Best narrative: Right to edit Official History, most powerful unit named after player
Best character: City where character lived named after him
Best strategy: New province named after player
Best Campaign: Written into history as a great leader
Best compromiser: Guaranteed appointment next term, Noble title

Sanctions:

Worst narrative the least powerful military unit named after player
Worst character Cityname lost; or other sanction
Worst strategy Province named after player renamed; or other sanction
Worst campaign Written into history as an infamous villain and weak one
Worst troublemaker Not eligible or appointable for office next term

I'm thinking rewards may not be a good idea. The real reward in a Demogame comes in the form of nominations for an elected office. I think deciding the results or awarding of theses rewards by polling is another bad idea.

If rewards is something that you really want to push forward, you might consider something like this double edged idea. Each elected official might get to choose a citizen for outstanding contributions in their official area or office concept. For example, the President (or big dog, whatever they're called at that time) might reward the citizen, who in the President's opinion was the most beneficial to the country in terms of contibutions of ideas or strategies or RPGing or whatever area they choose, with naming the most significent historical event during their time in office (a war, a golden age, trade acquistion period, etc.) after that citizen. The Domestic Leader might do the same by naming a body of water (lake, river, sea, etc.), a mountain range, or some other geographic feature, after said citizen. This kind of format would not only reward the citizen by receiving this honor, but would also be a perk of being elected. No polling neccessary.

If applicable, the reverse may be used as a negative way of of viewing a citizen's actions during the official's time in office. Replacing a named event or geographic feature, etc. would show dissapproval of wrongful posting or some such action.

In the Civ 3 DG1 (sorry it's where most of my DG experience came from), there weree some honors that were given out for various things. They weren't standardized however. One person (really it was just one person who tended to nominate people) would suggest that someone would get the "Phenotican Kross" (normally a name they made up themselves) or what not, and a poll would be created to vote on if that person should actually get that award or not.

However, since things weren't very standardized for it, and it was really just one person saying "we should give this guy a reward and let's call it this, now let's vote on it." It didn't have too much meaning. So if something like that were standardized where we have a set award for things it would be an improvement on that. But that said... it will add to the RPG element... but I'm not 100% sure it will actually encourage good behavior.

I'm kind of iffy on this. So I am kind of undecided at this point.

That I doubt I would ever earn :-/

Rewards should be little things: Like naming map features or cities or units after someone, or maybe the honor of putting something in their signatures that would also serve to advertise the demo game :p
