RFC: BtS Bug Reports

I've never once touched any of the coding. I dont know near enough about coding to even make an attempt.

As for my OS, its regular old Windows XP.

As for my OS, its regular old Windows XP.
Same as me, then. :D I don't know what your problem could be, but most issues people are having has to do with installing in the wrong place. Make absolutely sure you've done it right!

Below is a picture of the correct installation path. Compare! (The XML folder is highlighted as you were getting XML errors.)

What are the actual errors you're getting? It would be hard for anyone to help you not knowing what they are...

Ok, I'm computer ******** so I dont know how to capture images of my screen like you did. So I did it the hard way and just wrote the errors down on papers. It opens with the following, halfway through loading...

Spoiler :
XML LOAD ERROR

Failed Loading XML File XML\GameInfo/CIV4EraInfos.XML.[.\FXml.cpp:133]Error parsing XML File-

File: xml\GameInfo/CIV4EraInfos.xml
Reason: Element Content is invalid according to the DTD/Schema.
Expecting: {x-schema:CIV4GameInfoSchema.xml}Build Percent

Line: 39,23
Source: <TechCostModifier>0</iTechCostModifier>

Followed by...

Spoiler :
XML Load Error
LoadXML call failed for GameInfo/CIV4EraInfos.xml

Followed by a seemingly endless series of error reports that look as follows...

Spoiler :
XML Error
Tag: ERA_ANCIENT in Info class was incorrect
Current XML File is: xml\Technologies/CIV4TechInfos.xml

I then click 'OK' 4 times and the error pop-up changes to the exact same thing except replace 'ANCIENT' with 'CLASSICAL', then I click 5 times and 'CLASSICAL' changes to 'MEDIEVAL' , then I click 6 times and it changes to 'RENAISSANCE', 6 more times to 'INDUSTRIAL', and finally 4 times to 'MODERN'. Then it repeats following the same pattern, and 'FUTURE' pops up randomly out of nowhere very occasionally. I must have clicked 100 times, I am fairly certain there is no end to the cycle.

Oh, and I checked my file paths, its exactly the same as yours.

I know next to nothing about XML but your mod seems broken to me. It makes no sense considering you've downloaded the mod anew (right?) and reinstalled everything.

Spoiler :
Your PC has something called a clip-board that is used whenever you copy-paste or cut-paste something. The thing (a piece of text like an Internet address, an image or a file, or whatever) you copied is stored in the clip-board until you replace it with some other thing by copying/cutting.

If you press the Print Screen button on your keyboard (look in the upper row, perhaps the same key as SysRg, next to buttons like Scroll Lock or Pause or Break) then a bitmap (image) of you current monitor screen is stored in the clip-board. By opening up a image editor (like Paint) you can paste the image into a empty document/picture. (You might have to Open one first.) Once there, you can manipulate it as any image. You should also save you image.

When playing CivIV, any time you hit Print Screen a screen caption is automatically saved in \My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\ScreenShots\ folder.

edit: I was thinking about your problem and I'm quite certain you have made a mistake somewhere. The error messages suggest to me that you have incompatible xml in your game. You need to double-check your version of BtS and RFC. Also note that you need the BtS edition of RFC, not the Vanilla or Warlords version - or the multiplayer or RAND version. I imagine something like this could happen if you try to run the Warlords version of RFC with BtS, or something like that.

Have you tried completely removing the entire game, then reinstalling all expansions and the latest BtS patch? (Note that you probably need to download and install the patch manually, don't rely on the automatic update feature.) Then lookup, download and install the latest BtS version of RFC. Double-check everything. Then triple-check.

Oh, and by uninstall I mean remove the game from the computer (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) and not just delete the files/folders. In fact, do both!

Well I uninstalled and reinstalled everything, again. I followed your picture to make sure I put everything in the right place (after re-downloading RFC 1.187). I triple-checked like you said to make sure my BtS was the most recent version (3.19), and got the exact same results. Alas, I find myself again, utterly baffled.

<TechCostModifier>0</iTechCostModifier> certainly isn't valid XML. You could try putting an 'i' in front of the first TechCostModifier. However, I don't see any TechCost anything in my CIV4EraInfos.xml (the standard BTS one - it doesn't look like RFC has its own). So there's probably another mod that's messing things up. Can you find out where exactly "<TechCostModifier>0</iTechCostModifier>" is coming from?

I cant really answer your question Soda, but the reason I cant answer it gives me an idea as to what the problem might be.

I cant even open the XML files. Any of them. I dont think I have the program required for my computer to read them. Can anyone tell me what program they use to look into their XML files?

Again, I'm computer illiterate so I cant figure out how to post images directly here, but I took a screen shot of what I see when I try to open an XML file and put it on photo bucket. Heres the link...

Broktor, you have been modding the game after all, haven't you? :mischief:

You should be able to open XML files by right-clicking on the file and choosing Open With... in the menu. Then select a text editor of choice, like Notepad.

Posting images on the boards is done by clicking on the Manage Attachments button under the message compose screen. (Not present in Quick Reply mode though.) It takes a while to figure out but involves looking up the image and uploading it. Once it is displayed under the heading Attach file (and also in Preview mode) you've succeeded. If you can manage Photobucket you should be able to post pictures here also.

Ok, I opened up all the files I could find under the XML folder... I cant find anything that has 'TechCostModifier' in it. Opened them all up and used ctrl-F to search the document for it, nothing came up. So in summary, once more I am baffled, as things appear to be popping up for absolutely no reason and out of nowhere.

You can try doing a file content search. Other than that, I don't know what else to suggest except for doing a complete reinstall of Civ 4.

I think I might be on to something. I wasn't able to find any reference to TechCostModifier so I did wider and wider searches on my own installation. It turns out that the Legends of Revolutions mod (which I installed) has this xml tag in Civ4EraInfos.xml - and on line #39 to boot! It doens't exist anywhere else in the game, as far as I can tell.

Try deleting the LoR mod if you have it, then. If you don't have it, then delete all other mods. Just to make sure.

Well, I dont have Legends of Revolutions, but I moved all other mods out of the mods folder and tried again. Same result. Baffled is me.

Oh, and Soda, I've already done 3 complete uninstall/reinstall's. Does nothing.

Does it still refer to the line #39 holding the xml tag <TechCostModifier>?

I believe you need to find the file containing that line. I found one such xml file on my own install, but the line had the correct <iTechCostModifier> tag. (It was part of the LoR mod.)

Something is very messed up at your end, in any case. I doubt you will resolve this issue by repeating what you've already done. Better luck with your next XP installation and/or PC?

I started as the dutch and said hello to France and Germany but they both said something wrong. I have some technologies and they say: "We don't want to start trading away this technology just yet." I think this is wrong, or am I?

You can't trade techs until couple turns after you have spawned, so play a little ahead and it goes away. And don't mind the text, it just says that probably because there isn't any better comment.

Now I found another problem...
When you get 5000 culture your borders go 5 squares of your city to the north, the south, the west and the east. but my Byzantium has only 2 squares to the east and there are no other borders of other civilizations.
Do you understand? Here is a picture of it...
Civ4ScreenShot0006(paint).JPG
Sorry for my bad English, I speak dutch.

That looks to me as the peak (mountain) is blocking the culture. Does it even work like that? (I think cultural borders extend differently into coastal and ocean tiles, at least.)

Peak might be the reason, but almost every time I play Greece with Byzantium, the culture borders never even reach that far... (extend to BFC, and then quit even though the borders should be much farther...)

maybe it has to do with the fact that there is a logical/scripted continental border between Byzantion and Anatolia?
(cultural borders do not extend to other landmasses if no city on the "home landmass" could work them), however, that would fail to explain, why southern Anatolia is in your cultural range.
The unmodded game produces some similar weirdness, too (it gains Anatolia and the mountain itself (separated via flodding the Nicaea tile), but also lacks some spots behind the mountain as well as the spot east of the wheat. :crazyeye:
