RFC Europe: Extending/Fixing City Name Maps

Okay, here's a version which should work fine on a 1024x768 display. In fact you can edit the CityNameHelper file to change the mode. It's as simple as commenting out one line and un-commenting the other. No other functional changes, but I've removed a lot of cruft from the code and files.

The situation has become a bit tad confusing, so a new list.

1 Pass Michael Vick´s suggestions in the map (Morocco, Sicily et cetera)
2 Expand Hungarian map (n-nw) , after incorporating operafantom's changes
3 New ottoman map
4 Make a Papal name list (crusade targets)

And BTW the helper-program is really great!!!

I might have not used the latest version from Post #263 in the most recent test file if that helps with your confusion.

And I have a request, which is that you add some capitol cities and Jerusalem to the Pope's map with common Western names. Specifically, I want to make the Crusade announcement take names from the Pope's map, rather than the local version of whatever the city is called.

The most obvious example is Al Quds -> Jerusalem. But the Crusade can get diverted to any capitol city, and will semi-frequently be sent against Cordoba or Constantinople instead, which can then be called by those names rather than Qurtubah, etc.

@ micbic

I think I'm going to send you some changes about the dutch city map, especially about some parts in the east. They are not quite synchronized, I can live with that, but some cities are placed too far away where they are IRL. Antwerpen is an example I currently have in mind, it should be on the coast, or at most 1 tile away from it, and Brussel is 1 tile south then.

@sedna: OK, say it done.
@WesselV1: The suggestions will be sent via screenshot?

I couldn't figure out how to get the namehelper program working, so here are some maps done the standard way.

They are all for the area from Marseille down to Florence.

The first three are in Italian and can be used for Genoa, Venice, and the Pope. They are added on to from the old maps and have a few changes to the names, for example where "Nizza" went too far East I put in some new names. Also Genoa had the "Marseilles" tiles as "Arpinum", I researched and couldn't find out what that was so I changed them to the Italian spelling "Marsiglia".

The second three are for the same areas but in Spanish, coordinated and everything. If you ever make a version with proper punctuation for the ethnic names:
Milan has an accent above the a for the Spanish map
Genova has an accent above the e for the Spanish map

Forgot to upload them with the last post.

I've finished coordinating the cityname map helper for Britain, Ireland and Iceland with names for the English, Norse, Swedish, Dutch, German, French and others. All tiles should be correct now. The map helper works fine for me but you really need to save after every tile change to make it work.

Does the Spanish Settler Map (not city name map) include this area? I'm always getting instability from coming here. The Spanish controlled the states of Genoa and Lucca for 200 years or so...

Back at Ioannina, back to work ;)
@Michael Vick: I think that only the narrow Genoa-Lucca area is included in the Settler map.
@jessiecat: Thx ;)

Spain controlled Milan, the plains in between too, who's the authority on settler maps?

"When Francesco died without heirs in 1535, the question of succession again arose, with both the Emperor and the King of France claiming the Duchy, leading to more wars. The Duchy of Parma was created in 1545 from a part of the Duchy of Milan south of the Po River, as a fief for Pope Paul III's illegitimate son, Pier Luigi Farnese, centered on the city of Parma.

The Emperor held the Duchy throughout, eventually investing it on his son Philip. The possession of the Duchy by Spain was finally recognized by the French in the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559.

The Duchy of Milan remained in Spanish hands until the War of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th century, when it was conquered by the Austrians. The Treaty of Baden which ended the war in 1714 ceded Milan to Austria. The Duchy remained in Austrian hands until it was overrun by the French army of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796. The Duchy was ceded by Austria in the Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797, and formed the central part of the new Cisalpine Republic." -wikipedia

Okay lads. Here is the new city-name-map.
Dos: New Hungary map from operafantom
Improvements in British Isles and Iceland from jessiecat
Viking era names for Norse in Denmark
Papal names for capitals are now in English, to fit sedna's idea for taking the ''target'' names from the Papal list when a crusade is announced (indeed it is strange to see ''are heading for the city of Al Quds'')
Donts (yet) : Michael Vick's Spanish and Portuguese maps (sorry but exams is exams)
New Turkish map
Synchronization of the Hungarian map

NOTE: For any of you wanting to help using the city name helper (and having the program) replace the old RFCEmaps file in its folder with that one.

More stuff for you, Micbic. I edited the Madrid/Toledo area with new names to correspond with the changed terrain. Also, taking a deeper look into the Denia/Cartagena issue, I learned a lot about that area, most importantly, is that we're missing a place for Murcia. Also, Alicante was in the wrong place entirely. ;) I redid a lot of it, I also moved Granada. (I remember some time ago, JediClemente also told me it was way off the mark).
Here are maps for the area in Spanish and Arabic.I didn't make an Arabic screenshot for Madrid, just name all the tiles Cuenca.

Because of a recent game I played as Portugal, my interest in the Azores/Madeiras issue was renewed. Turns out the Madeiras still have Azores names. Here are screenshots of names for Madeira, and the Azores. In addition, there's still more land West of the Azores we have room for. Here is my proposal for an extra island tile to represent Terceira.

Also, minor edits to the maps I already gave you;
Casablanca for the Portuguese is "Casa Branca".
Tlemcen for the Arabs is "Tilimsan"
I discovered history of an important medievaL trading city South of Fez, Its name is Sijilmassa, and it can take up an extra tile of those plains down there.

EDIT: Not in the screenshot, Melilla in Berber is Tamelilt. Are we going for the Arab or Berber spelling?

Names are good for both Spanish and Portuguese. The now featured island, screenshot 2, top left, is the island of Terceira. It's capital, and the capital of all the Azores is Angra do Heroismo. It was discovered and settled by Portuguese explorer Alvaro Martins in 1474, and was the first settlement in all the archipelago. It had an important commercial port during Portugal's imperial years, so is, in my opinion, a significant city, no? Can we include it?

For the Arab spelling for the Arabs, I think Berber is more accurate for Cordoba.

That's true for cities in North Africa but not for those in Spain. The Arab rulers there definitely called locations and towns in the own language, Arabic, even though most of their soldiers were ethnic Berbers. Even the name "Al Andalus" means "Land of the Vandals" in Arabic.

There's lots of editing to do if you guys want Berber names in North Africa... Should I get to work?

The majority of the names we are using in North Africa are already Berber in origin. A few are the Arabic alternative. Believe me, because I researched most of them. Unless someone comes up with a specific objection, why not leave them as they are? Otherwise this constant revision of city names will go on forever, won't it?:)

As they are in this version???

micbic, I have couple of fixes to make to the Bulgarian/Byzantine/Turkish and perhaps Kievan maps. More often than not the AI founds Tomis, which at this time was not a significant city. Both Varna and Kavarna were much bigger more influential (Varna was for a long time the largest Black Sea port north of Constantinople and Kavarna was the capital of a large independent state).

So my question is: Do I give you a WB file with markings, or do I make the changes myself and give you the updated city name map. Since I am taking over for sedna17, it is now me doing the coding and you doing the city name maps.
