RFC Europe: Extending/Fixing City Name Maps

Well, I have this great atlas of the world (it's a huge book). It's even more amazing since it contains all of the names of the cities in countries in their own language! So, I think I could help with the city names maps.

Hi! Sorry for necromancy, but how did you do the citynames files in the WB? How did you convert the tags to a python file? I#ll ask because I need it for the Rhye's and Fall of Asia mod :). Thanks for answers in advance.

I changed the german city names map because a few plots were missing correct names or had some typos. Here is the file, so you can have a look and hopefully upload it.

Edit: It just went over it again and correct some typos i missed and changed some citynames, that were grossly out of place.

I have a couple of Python scripts to go from WBS<->RFCEMaps.py file. There's klunky, and would need to be modified at least somewhat but I could post them. I also have a little python program to allow direct editing of the RFCEMaps.py file. This program has a bunch more stuff hard-coded. I can post it, but probably only provide limited help in getting it running.

I already found a workaround with excel, but you could post those files nevertheless. Maybe they make it easier as it is now with my method :).

For Lübeck in Danish wiki I found a name Lybæk. Perhaps assign it upon conquest as being more authentic? Currently it's "Lubeck" as I have experienced.

If people prefer danish names for fx. german cities when under norse control because of flavour, no problem - but to be honest, most danes would be confused f we saw the name "Lybæk" - we don't really translate the german city names, but always use the original german names aswell.

Just a thought but shouldn't prague be called Praha? I still havn't tried this mod out yet, but just to shout out...

No, why should it? Is there any Bohemian civ? (no there isn't, and as cities get named as per the native language of the played civ...)

I think what he's getting on at is that the Independant/barbarian Prague should be rendered as Praha.
Similarly, the independant city of Toulouse would be rendered as Tolosa. (the indigineous occitan name)

One thing I'd like to report is that the burgundian naming of the Hague is incorrect - it is reading "Le Haye" and it should be "La Haye".
Also there is a spelling mistake for the burgundian rendering of Trier in germany - that should be "Trèves", not "Trèyes".

Cheers for reading. I'm normally a bit of a lurker on this forums, but keep up the good work all concerned. This mod had great times ahead!

I actually just found the name "Zavist" at Wikipedia, which was the name of an ancient Celtic settlement (wow these guys are spread allover the Europe!).
Your point about Tolosa is correct (it was the Roman name IIRC)

Budapest should be renamed Buda because Budapest only born in 1873 with the unification of the surronding regions

I noticed in my Sweden UHV test game that the city name map changes for Finland haven't been implemented, though gave them to you in post 499, half a year ago.:crazyeye: It would be really awesome if somebody could finally put them in the game...

Mmm... duly noted. Thanks for the reminder.

If you care about such things, I have been experimenting with adding a thin strip of land along the top of the map connecting Sweden and Finland. It's not geographically accurate, but it does seem to help the Swedish AI get involved on the continent (they build a cute long snaking road through it). Does this sound okay?

Sounds like the best solution. Shouldn't Finland be in Sweden's flip zone? Finland was a part of Sweden for the entirety of Sweden's existence in the mod, and there was an agreement (later broken) between Sweden and Russia (Novgorod) that Sweden would have the western part of Finland.

Sounds great! Though the greographical accuracy is probably going to bother somebody, I don't see it as a problem. The map of Finland could be modified so that it would be more correct, since geographically the land mass is 1-2 tiles north from the edge of the map, but that would be difficult too.

Yep, this is correct
The city on the hungarian starting position should be Pest (left bank of Danube), and the city one tile west should be Buda (right bank)

Also, right now the Ottoman cities are named Brusa (capital) and Edirne (Adrianople)
Shouldn't they be Bursa and Edrine?

Yep, this is correct
The city on the hungarian starting position should be Pest (west bank of Danube), and the city one tile WEST should be Buda (east bank)

I hope you mean east.
