I keep Amsterdam, against my better judgement, :D.

Well, news that comes with the new update; finished off the game so there is no turning back now.

The assault upon Amsterdam is taking a heavy toll on both sides of the battle. The people of Amsterdam are fighting to keep their nation intact, and the Romans are fighting to avenge their fallen emperor. The Romans are dug in and fighting an extremely lopsided engagement, though who has the greatest stranglehold over the situation seems to be a major point of contention between the Dutch and the Romans themselves. Losses have mounted at an incredible rate for both sides; for the Romans, almost two hundred thousand troops have died trying to smash the last stronghold of Dutch superiority in the world, while the Dutch have suffered close to three hundred thousand confirmed military deaths, and close to five hundred thousand civilians. Indeed, the siege has gone on for so long at this point that a perpetually active cloud of carrion birds and flesh eating flies have settled in and are now gorging on the dead and unburied corpses in the rubble and out in the fields.

The situation is dire indeed; in the next assault upon the Amsterdam walls, Dutch sharpshooters take out five centurions and crack seven companies of Romans and force them to retreat. They come back into the fray shortly after wards, but it is a grim reminder of the fact that the Romans morale is fading fast despite their superior numbers and technological advantage. The Dutch morale is even lower, as their troops are panicking at the revelation that large numbers of them might not be coming out of this battle alive.

Emperor Tiberius I is still leading the charges against Amsterdam since a fair portion of his finest generals have been killed as well as large swathes of the officer corps. The Dutch know who to shoot at this point, requiring a new necessity of standard uniforms for the Roman legions to prevent most of the officer corps from further bullets through the face... and the eyes... and the teeth.

Dug in longbow men of the Dutch Southern Home Guard Army have cracked and are dead. The Romans have swept over their positions and now have control over a large amount of the southern suburbs. Dutch generals scramble to try and force the Romans out of the city, but it is a rapidly devolving task; Dutch civilians, soldiers as well as mercenaries fight amongst the rubble of their once grand city as the Romans cut down the Dutch by the dozens as they advance through the blood stained streets. Even Dutch children over the ages of eight are prepared to do anything, and reported stabbings by groups of armed Dutch children are reported here and there. The situation is now coming apart rather quickly as the Roman army moves out of it's filthy camps outside of the city and occupies the southern suburbs of Amsterdam.

The Dutch fight on valiantly no matter the cost... but they are losing this engagement and they know it as well. They retreat and repulse the Romans in waves as the legions try to forge deeper into the heart of the city, but it is getting dangerous to do so. Alleyways and seemingly abandoned houses are not safe, nor are most of the streets as Dutch martyrs stream out of the sewers underneath the streets to try and halt the Roman advance deeper into the city. Many Dutch civilians are being evacuated by boat, which gives the entrenched fighters something else to hold onto as they die and are cut down as they do the same to the Roman soldiers.

Fighting continues on as Emperor Tiberius himself spots the lead General of the Dutch forces and sends his personal musketmen into battle to try and kill the man and end the fighting in the western portion of the city in the heavy commercial and residential zones of the city. Two legions and two groups of Dutchmen meet there and start the bloody fight to try and repulse the enemy troops and possibly kill the leaders of either side.

The bloody battle in the western portion of the city ends with one victory for each side... Emperor Tiberius and General Arminius are dead. Killing each other in a final duel, the Dutch are left completely without higher leadership whatsoever, and they know it as well. The Dutch entrench themselves for the final battle and count their losses; the Romans have lost nearly nine and a half thousand troops to the sword, the Dutch have lost nearly twelve thousand and most of the command chain that was keeping their forces bound together like glue.

The remaining Dutch soldiers in the city prepare for the worse onslaught of Roman soldiers ever seen on the world before. They are wise to be prepared.

Three days after Tiberius I dies and his son Tiberius II succeeds him, the order is given; charge and take the city by storm. More than one hundred and seventy thousand Roman soldiers begin part of a broad sweeping attack pattern known as Operation Pluto. They move into the central part of the city and begin to cut their way through most of the garrison stationed in the city, no matter if they are fleeing or not. Fury is in their hearts and they will not be stopped.

Amsterdam, the Jewel of Europe for it's splendorous trade and power, is finally captured after a long and bloody series of hand to hand street battles and melee engagements in the heart of the city itself. The sheer power of the Roman legions cracked the Dutch and forced them to flee and surrender. The Dutch king himself was captured, later on committing suicide to avoid a trial by the Roman Senate back in Roma.

The first thing Tiberius II does when he gets to Amsterdam is to order construction of a grand monument.

This monument contains the names of every person who died in the battle for Amsterdam, starting with this;

In commemoration of the brave soldiers that gave their lives to defend their homes, and the brave soldiers who fought to take this city, this wall shall stand till the end of time as a testament to their glory and valor. Maximus IX and Tiberius I of Roma shall always be remembered as the emperors and men we all aspire to be. Christ preserve and keep them all in his bountiful Kingdom of Heaven.

Not quite... the next conquest is somewhere more far flung I imagine.

The romans had a word for peace? :/

Oh! Pax! One letter from Pox.

May Pax be with you=May the Pox be with you. :evil:

:lol:, we have shorter periods of Pax Romana in this game then the Roman Empire did. But we have them more frequently as well, since I always want to kill another nation.
