Rift. New MMO about to release....

And yet, WoW is a game you can enjoy at that level of play.

Except you won't be able to do a huge amount of the content only playing an hour a day... so it isn't really a good way to play the game with how it is designed :p It would kind of be like having sex but stopping half way through.

The people who find enjoyment in playing for an hour a day probably aren't that interested in seeing absolutely all the content, or simply don't have the time to commit to any level of raiding to be able to see absolutely everything.

I believe I said
"Getting far" is completely irrelevant, the only concern is if the game is playable in a small time period that returns rewards meaningful to the player.

If I play for 30 minutes a day and I am enjoying myself and the game because I get what I want from it, what kind of pompous jerk does that make a person for telling someone else "no you got it wrong you should play games and value them like I do!"

Edit: Also, WoW was designed to be played in short sessions as well as long ones.

Well, I guess I can only speak for myself, but in general, in mmos like WoW, I enjoy the quests and leveling up of the characters far more than the end game stuff.

I know several people who have played WoW, at only an hour or so here and there, and have still enjoyed it a lot. Quests and storylines still appeal to some.

That kind of seems like a waste of money and they'd be better off playing another game.

Isnt that up to them to decide?

How many hours a month do you have to play a game in order for it to not be a 'waste of money'?

Actually, you can do pretty much anything with an average of one hour a day, and anything but raid with a maximum of one hour a day.
Which is precisely why and how it became boring, shallow and too easy. No involvement means no rewarding feelings.

True, but many don't, and instead cry and whine that they can't have it all. Which brings nerfs and dumbing down so that Mr Casual can be happy - and ruins anything that made WoW a game in the process.

(notice that I don't harbor any ill will to casuals that are happy with what they can get in a reduced amount of time, only against those who feel entitled that they should have everything immediately because they pay and log on)

Almost EVERYONE complains (from my experience with forums and games now and in the past, and one reason why I rarely check the official forums for games and certainly not the only mmorpg I'm interested in (Guild Wars)) if its not about the game, its about the other players.

Yeah, no matter what developers do, people are always going to find something to complain about. Sometimes justified, often times not.

@Akka. Odd, in all my years of gaming its not usually the casual player that makes complaints, but the power gamers.
Well, you haven't seen the crybabies in WoW forums then.
The sense of self-entitlement here based on "I pay and I log on so I expect to have everything handed to me on a silver platter" is overwhelming.

But... but... I need epics like everyone else. My $15 / mo says that I deserve h3tty purplez too!!1!

Nah, the only time I go forum diving for something like that is when I am trying to min/max a certain build or something.

If you want to min/max, Elitist Jerks is about one thousand times better than the official forums - and it's the source of 90 % of the min-maxing of the official forums anyway.

Yeah, pretty much everything on the official forums is going to be parroted from EJ or somewhere else. I'd be surprised if there's much original stuff in there.

I've been using that site for years....

I'm guessing most casual gamers aren't on forums.

And this is probably true as well. If your really a casual player, you want to use what limited time you have actually playing....not forum surfing.

Ars review of the game: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/...a-shows-strong-combat-customization-rifts.ars

For better or worse, WoW is the de facto standard in the MMORPG world, and Rift has not forgotten this. On startup, old WoW salts will notice that the hotkeys are currently mapped exactly, and we mean exactly, the same as in WoW—O for social, P for spellbook, and so forth. While this gave us a sense of copycat-related foreboding, once we got into the game, Rift proved to have dynamics and gameplay that stand apart from WoW.

Casuals do complain. With their wallets. :ack:

Not happy? Play another game. Why waste precious time gripping about one game in particular? :p

It is in open beta right now, good time to see for yourself.

At this point the beta is scheduled to end at 10 am on the 21st. It will take 7 hours to download the client so I won't be trying it out. :)
