Ring around the world

This is an idea that I did on Prince but since this will be Monarch I am interested in the results.

So we go like this;

Warlords
Objective: to have all our cities borders touching (after border pop of course) at all times, (so we need at least one fat cross tile next to another) around the globe.....after that we will come, will come, to a diplomatic vote to decide on the victory.

Leader traits; organized, imperialistic, expansive.

Which leaves us with; (reading as I go) ...............The Ottaman Empire!

Any rules? Yes. We can not at any cost declare war on any city that is not within our path of ringing the globe, and this also includes any barb cities that happen to cross our pass.....I know it will be tempting but well...............

given the restrictions the leaders that I came up I am not totally opposed to suggestions (financial a possible) so go ahead and make your opinion known, no harm done.

Map: Large Lakes, or if we are really feeling up for a challange we could do Fantasy.
SUB: Barbs on normal, sea level = random. Epic or Marathon, it will go long.

If we need to stretch borders across water that is fine but we can not have more than one latitude between the cities, it is lakes so I don't think this should be a factor but I have seen stranger.

Not a sign-up, but how about a Pangaea and build around the coast? Lakes map will wrap along the sides and it will be difficult to tell where the ring should be?
 
Well I am not a big fan of Pangea, I seem to be the only one. The wrap around world aspect to my knowledge has never been done ( I think the Pangea ring has been tried on a Story, with a loss ) on a SG so I would like to give it a go. I don't see that it will be hard on the wrap, maybe because I can't even remember the last time on a full world I got a center position. Once you get three cities or so it becomes quite clear...you just have to resist that urge to settle outside the "boundaries" to get that extra resource or take that 'ripe' city that you know you want.:D

The main problem will be cash flow. I think we should be able to overcome this without a financial leader, hell we will be taking pretty much all cities in our path so the pillaging should put us in the black for a good part of the early-mid game. It will get ugly!
 
I'd like to sign up (I'm a pretty competent Monarch player normally).

I've been experimenting with a vaguely similar idea whereby you can only found cities within your existing cultural borders and that's made for some fun games so this sounds like something I'd like to try too.

Fantasy has wrapping in both axes and painfully expensive distance costs although whether those cripple us or the AI more is open to debate, but it would leave us the option of forming the ring in either x or y axis. Whatever the map type, I just hope you don't roll a tundra start!

On getting some sleep I beleive that the Fantasy map would be a bit to difficult, at least on monarch. We could probably pull it off on Prince but lets maybe stick with the lakes.
It will be difficult specializing any cities as we are going to need pretty much everything in each to keep us in the game, especially to keep our borders from shrinking. Unless we roll just above tundra which would be ideal we will be cutting right through the middle of alot of territories.

Sub rule: Since we will be declaring war more than I would wish, or should I say they, our troops are allowed to take on anything and anyone they want outside of the borders, including cities.
So we can attack anyone and anything as long as we are at war, all cities outside the objective will be razed. Can we all say "Burn 'em up good"
 
So you take a lakes map that wraps east and west. Then build/conquer cities to make a ring around the world and win by diplomatic.

The question is to have enough friends to win the vote or to make the ring "wider" by conquering neighbour cities.

By the another interesting concept would be to have a map that wraps east-west and north-south and then have a ring over the equator and one over the poles...

Anyway, sign me up, sounds interesting.

Does the variant only allow one ring of cities? Or can it be two wide.With some overlap it could be wider. Is that allowed:

Hope that makes sense. Each number corresponds to a city. Double numbers show overlap.


Can the path of cities go diagonally down, then diagonally up to go around a lake or mountain ridge?

In the end the world will be split in two, divided by the ring. Probably good to have other civs either above or below us and not both ...

To alleviate the maintenance burden we should plan the Palace, FP and versailles at equal intervals around the world, like every 5 cities or so. Con someone do a tile count of large map? :)

State property could also solve our problems.

We need to decide early if we will win the vote by making friends or razing them and having the majority in our civ.
 
Fantasy wrapping in both axes outwards from the capital could be interesting. There's a lot of detail about the workings of fantasy realm maps in the RB24 Big Brother thread.

Maybe stipulate that one ring has to be complete before the other can be started?

We can play with patched Warlords now too. :)
 
Just let you guys know that Baru's computer is kaput and will be OOP for a while until he get's it fixed. He gave me the impression that he can't afford to fix it for a while so maybe one of you could take the lead and start this SG. Remconius see that you hail from "nederland". Lived there in the 70's near Rotterdam. (Hoogvliet) Living in Canada now but still have a hankering for dropjes from time to time.

I wasnt exactly sure about the variant, hence my post above. Can you explain in a bit more detail?

Why don't you be strict and make it 1 city width? I think the "rim" cities don't have to be exactly that lined up as long as fat crosses touch/overlap. So yeah you could kinda twist the rules? Like:

I like Robo's suggestion and Remconius make up your own rules if you take the lead. That sounds difficult to me the variant but worth a try. He does mean all the around the globe right??? mmmmm Then it would have to be pangea.

So lakes and he must mean 1 degree and what does that equate to on the map and probably depends on size. For argument I would 1 tile is one degree.

First fat cross shows which edges (blue) have to be touched by the next city.

Even with overlap (top right)

Bottom example has one illegal one because it is not touching the right or left side of the previous city.

Sound reasonable?
 
Yes it does. Are you going for it remconius? I was only speaking on Baru's behalf since I know he can't due to computer not working. I wasn't really looking to play this since I'm tied up with 5 SG's already and want to be ready for SGOTM03. It does sound enticing but very difficult to do.
 
I am also a little tied up in SGs but when a spot clears up Ill start this one.
