After finishing my PhD I have a few months before starting with the next phase in my life, so I’m going to be traveling in Europe and Australia in June and July. This thread will be a running commentary on the things I’m doing on this trip, complete with pictures.

Destination 1: Norway

After arriving jet lagged on Tuesday evening I realized that I was going to have the bad luck of having my entire time be in the 50s and rainy, something I’ve been told is unusual by this point in June. However, there was still plenty of opportunity for me to see the sights in Oslo and meet new people. I especially liked the extensive bike paths that made getting around the city easy when it wasn’t raining.

Overall though 6/10, the weather really limited my enjoyment of the first few days of this trip. Here are a few of the highlights I got while here;

Norway has trees that big? ;)

Another travel thread! great! I don't travel much, but I like this type of thread.

That Opera house is nice - have been walking on top of it as well :)

Destination 2: Copenhagen

I really liked Copenhagen! The weather was amazing for most of my stay, the culture in Denmark is very nice, and the hostel I stayed at was top notch with plenty of people to meet and multiple onsite bars.

The unfortunate part is that last Friday I got sick and I’m still not quite back to normal now, so I effectively lost my weekend in Copenhagen to that. :cry:

This makes me a bit worried about the Australia portion of my trip coming up. It’s one thing to be sick in bed or on a plane, but some days I will have 8 hours of driving there which could really be a problem if I get sick again.

What is the big white building the top picture? Is Christiania the Danish hippie town?

It's a hotel (Hotel d'Angleterre, don't ask me why it's named "The England Hotel", but in French!). We visited that same square (Kongens Nytorv) during a daytrip to Copenhagen over Easter. Here are the GoogleMap coords:

And yes, that's Christiania, which is (kinda sorta) its own sovereign territory. Wiki calls it an 'anarchist commune':

Yeah I went there last Friday it was certainly a “unique” place. They closed down the weed market last year so it smelled basically normal though.

I didn’t get as many good photos of the city as I would have liked what with getting sick but that was one of the better ones. Here are a couple more;

Destination 3: Stockholm

Stockholm is a quieter city than Copenhagen and the hostel I stayed at was a lot smaller. That said, it was still a pretty city marred only by me still being ill most of last week. I got to participate in the Midsommar festivities (photos of me wearing a crown of flowers not included) last weekend which was a lot of fun, finding places that were open last weekend was not so much fun by comparison. :lol:

Overall I’m glad to be moving on from the Nordic countries now, while there was plenty of good stuff to see and do it was all a bit uptight and boring by my standards. Amsterdam this week promises to be far more fun…
