JOHNNY RAMONE (1948-2004) R.I.P.

Taken from http://ramones.com

"Los Angeles, CA (September 15, 2004) -- Johnny Ramone, co-founder and lead guitarist of seminal 70’s punk rock band The Ramones, died in his sleep this afternoon at 3:03 pm in his home in Los Angeles. Ramone had been fighting an ongoing five year battle with prostate cancer. At the time of his death, Ramone was surrounded by friends and family that included his wife Linda Cummings, Eddie and Jill McCormack, Rob and Sherrie Zombie, John Frusciante and Robert Carmine. Additional friends who gathered at the home included Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Lockwood, Pete Yorn, Vincent Gallo, Steve Jones, Talia Shire, Gia Coppola and Jackie Getty. Johnny Ramone, whose real name was Johnny Cummings, co-founded The Ramones in 1974 along with fellow bandmates Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band. The band, which gained critical acclaim and a huge following in New York’s underground music scene at the time performing at clubs such as CBGB’s, is widely credited for bringing the “punk rock” genre to the forefront. The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Johnny Ramone is survived by his wife Linda Cummings and his mother Estelle Cummings. His body will be cremated during a private ceremony."

I don't know if Johnny Ramone or even The Ramones effected any of you but I know for sure they effected my life. If it wasn't for that summer night when I was in 6th grade, staying up listening to them, I would be a completely different person. They made me gain an interest in music, in the world, and punk rock which ultimately spurred what I am today.

My heart has another hole in now that he died. Many great pioneers of punk have died in recent years such as Joey Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, and Joe Strummer. Now Johnny's gone and I'm stunned. Although he wasn't the most talented, he was one of the best guitarists ever. Even Rolling Stones magazine declared he was the 16th best guitarist of all time. It's a real shame how things go and how your greatest idols die slow and painfully.

I was kind of amazed that nobody made a thread about Johnny's death yet. Maybe I'm one of the only few Ramones fans on these boards. I don't know. But please feel free to share memories, thoughts, and impressions about Johnny Ramone and The Ramones.

I love the Ramones, and I'm very very upset that Johnny died :(

I don't think he was a good guitarist though, all he did was play chords, but damn they're cool :D.

Strange thing about the ramones is, there considered to be the band that birthed punk rock, but Johnny was conservative. :hmm:

Yeah that is a strange thing. The Ramones weren't as politically focused as other bands such as The Clash, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Fear, Sex Pistols, Subhumans, Exploited. However, they were still quite political, atleast how their songs are viewed although they kind of state that they hate everything.. according to that song.

Respect. I never "got into" the Ramones but I recognize the influence. Very strange how 3 of them died in such short proximity.

Joey Ramone (AKA Jeffrey Hyman)-Died of lymphoma on April 15, 2001 at the age of 49.

DeeDee Ramone (AKA Douglas Colvin)-Died of a Heroin overdose on June 5, 2002 at the age of 49.

A sad day. My band has a show this weekend, and we will play a song (haven't picked one yet) to remember Johnny by. I really got into the Ramones over this past year, and even though I wasn't alive in their time, I recognize the influence they have had.

I've listened to their music, and it sucks. No offense.
It depends who you compare them to. If for example you do not like speeded up, jaunty, tongue in cheek rock then you are unlikely to find the Ramones pleasing to your ears.
The Ramones formed in an age when bands were playing self indulgent ten minute long songs with tedious guitar solos, the Ramones provided a remedy in the form of three minute blasts of high energy tunes. Yes, musically they were simple and 100% unpretentious. Personally I really enjoyed a lot of what they produced.
RIP Johnny Ramone.

I am not a Ramones man, but they were against the grain, and done it for rock.

I can salute that. The big C is a sad end for anyone...:(

But their immortality in music is assured now.

i like maybe 3 of their songs, but i respect them alot

that spiderman theme song is cool

Milestones.. :(

Rockaway Beach (Rocket to Russia, 1977)

Chewing out a rhythm on my bubble gum
The sun is out and I want some.
It's not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride
To Rockaway Beach.
Up on the roof, out on the street
Down in the playground the hot concrete
Busride is too slow
They blast out the disco on the radio
Rock Rock Rockaway Beach
Rock Rock Rockaway Beach
We can hitch a ride
To Rockaway Beach
It's not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride
To Rockaway Beach.

Farewell Johnny..
