Roads between City States and Capital

Does a road have to be only over land? In other words if you have a city with a harbor with a clear connection to the capital and you connect a City State to that city, should the road be acknowledged? If so, then I think the latest patch might have broken it. I've built two roads that do not cross any other state's borders but the CS never says it's been completed. I have connected a city state directly by road, though, so that aspect is still working.

Thanks for any help/insights.

Before I go into anything else, first check that your roads are connected to the city-state's roads. You can't just put your road next to the city-state's borders, it must be connected to the actual city. If the city state has failed to do it, you can just build it yourself, (I think that) they pay for it.

In order to have a trade route over sea, you must have a city on both sides of the sea with a harbour in both of them. It sounds to me like you might just be having a harbour on one side, and then just connecting road, starting from the sea, to the city-state. It doesn't work like that. The two harbours must in the same body of water too for a successful trade route. If your city on the other side has the symbol of a trade route, I don't know what the problem is. I would suggest that you are missing a road at one point.

FYI...the road to the CS can not travel through another players city because even if they are frendly it won't open the route to gain the bonus.

If the city is connected to your capital, it should have a little icon of three coins on a blue background over its name. If it does, there's a problem with your road to the city state. If it doesn't, you haven't hooked it up properly via harbors.

I have had multiple problems occur when trying to do this seemingly simple task, even when the route is clear it will sometimes not give me the bonus. What I found works 100% of the time is have a few workers automated. If it can be done they will do it. I've had this done once where I manually built the road and nothing happened, but when the automated workers did it it gave me the bonus.

On the subject of automation, I wish that you could tell your workers to replace all road with railroad automatically. It would be so useful. When you tell the workers to go from one city to another, there is no guarantee that they will follow the same route as before, meaning you are paying for routes you're not using. And if you very specifically made your trade route in the first place, you have to do that all over again, which is very tedious especially in late-game when the game is running very slowly.

I appreciate all the input. I built the roads right to the CS capital and, yes, there were harbors on both sides of the ocean.

Does there have to be a harbor in your capital? What if it's inland?

I will try the automated workers idea.

In the case I was discussing, I had a sort of 'U' shaped continent, with my most lands in one leg, but I had a couple cities in the other leg in order to have my own source of certain luxuries. Both these cities had the '3 star' symbol showing that the trade route was active and complete. In one case, the City State was barely 10 hexes from a city, but it never acknowledged the road.

Again, I appreciate your help and input. I suppose we can hope that the programmers will look into this for the next patch.

I'm a fairly new player, haven't come across this quest yet, but I have a question about it:
Once you've laid this road and it's acknowledged by the city state, can you break it up again - for cost reasons - or how long do you need to maintain this road?
