Roads do not do anything?

In a spot of irony I'm okay with the way roads are.

I don't like the slow movement of Civ VI, but to make roads turn units into uber fast ones would clash with that. So, given the movement system we have, I'm okay with the less than stellar roads. Especially since it makes aerodromes more appealing.

Also, very good point about the policy that makes units in home terrain gain +1 movement. In Industrial that means +2 hexes.

So, my questions is, how do you get a road between two cities that you don't want to connect with a trade route? Because, don't you have a limited number of trade routes? So what happens to places that don't connect via trade route?

Also, creating foreign trade routes, given how easy it is to piss of the AI in this games, seems like it just creates an easier path for them to send their military units at you. Grated AI doesn't seem to understand that it can use military units to attack anything, but assuming it did...

Finally, what about the fact that in real world you can build roads for strategic purposes, and nations have done that. I really liked the Civ 5 implementation where you controlled where your roads went but had to pay maintenance on them, preventing you from just spamming them in every square.

Waiting for AI or CS to build a road that pass through your 2 cities, building a road that pass through your 2 cities (roads seems aimed by cities), building a lot of engineers (2 tiles per units) :)
edit : I'm not sure, is there road build when you build a zone? So continuous zones between cities may also work
edit 2 : Ho, and you can get a large amount of trade route, so it's a problem early game, mid and late game you have plenty of them

I agree roads or disappointing. Ancient era roads are fine, but there really seems to be no difference between classic era through industrial. I don't notice more movement until modern era, everything in between just leaves you with fractions of a move.

I can understand classical roads just helping with rivers, it can be helpful.

But industrial ones need to be better, especially for infantry units. 0.75 is just not enough to get any difference, if not cavalry.
