Well, EU: Rome is the neglected one in the main Paradox series (though with such a large gap between in and the CK games, it can also be considered more of a spinoff). Its not as popular as the other Paradox games, and from what I hear its supposed to be somewhat meh.

Also, from what I can tell, a good chunk of the forum membership is in the Eastern US, and your first post would've been at 4am, with the second at 9; I assume people just glanced at the thread before work/school/sleep.

Indeed, while I've played CK2, Vicky II, and and EU3, and loved them, I've never tried EU:R.

I had eu3 , I hated the graphics

Vanilla EU3 or Divine Wind? Divine Wind really improves them, and EU3 is one of the most popular paradox games and is overall quite good.

I started a game of EU: Rome once. I settled a uncivilized province in northern Italy. I watched it grow. I was close to be able to civilize it. It was trashed by barbarians.

Much ragequitting ensued.

my first attempt was with Macedonia. the whole of greece, illariya and rome attacked me all at once. Even massilia had sent in troops !!
loss of couple of provinces --- > ragequit.

My second attempt was with Rome itself, then again, Magna Grecia and Illiriya, attacked for some reason.

Now seeking tips from pros....

The saddest part of the game play is the fact that even though troops lose the battles, they somehow crawl into my interior provinces. Just no logic to it.

Meh. Just get RTW with EB. It's a much better game, and a much more historically accurate representation of the world Republican Rome inhabited. Leaving aside the real-time battles, even the role-playing and administrative management is superior.

I played as the Romans, Macedonians, and as one of the Greek states (I think the Achaean League). The game had a serious ping-pong problem where defeated troops would have to be defeated several times, bouncing between provinces, before the stack was finally eliminated. The expansion vastly improved the politics and internal management over vanilla to the point where it was actually playable. I didn't really care for the omen mechanics, and even the expanded political system caused some frustration.

As far as military recommendations, amass heavy infantry with a few cavalry units for flanking and you'll generally be able to beat opponents unless your generals suck (the quality of your generals matters a lot more in EU:R than in most Paradox games). Horse archers are pretty nice, but they are hard to come by as the Romans. Protect your civilization level, especially in border areas, to make sure you can colonize. I would regularly launch "punitive" expeditions to go out and attack barbarians before they could form doomstacks and wreck my holdings.

are we still talking of Rome Europa Universalis ?

or Rome Total War ?
RTW: EB is awesome !!

@ ANtilogic : suggested expansions and mod ? where from to buy them from ?
sorry i am a tech

RTW: EB is a completely different game.

I think the expansion for Europa Universalis: Rome is called Vae Victus or something like that. I assume it's available on Gamersgate, Steam, or anywhere else that sells EU:R. It's been awhile since I got it, and at that point I wasn't on Steam.
