Rome - how strong is Rome and why

The idea with rome is to open with liberty, settle iron and use an early army of legions to puppet at least one of your neighbouring civs then you can use that base to pursue multiple victory conditions. They're not top tier but are solid second tier.

I've grown to hate Rome. If you see my thread called "I keep getting my butt whooped" you can see I can't even play Rome on Emperor without ragequitting in the renaissance era because either:
a) my army is obsolete (knights crushing my legions)
b) my army is too small
c) the upkeep of my empire is either too expensive or too harsh on happiness.
It's great to expand with legions and ballistae IF you get enough iron, but you'll have to take a harsh, harsh blow once legions become obsolete in my experience.

Upgrade or delete ur legions for pikemen and knights and longswordmen and musketmen my goodness sakes. xD

Doesn't matter I have fended off tanks with landsknechts.

Their Unique Ability is one of the ones that is useful on every map type, to every victory type, in every playstyle, in every era, as well, which is more than you can say for some civs.

Umm... OCC?

Ask me how I know.

I play Rome almost exclusively, have for every Civ, until playing OCC on Civ5, their UA is abjectly useless.

Greece, on the other hand, has an outstanding UA for OCC...

Playing OCC with Rome is similar to play without City-states with Greece/Siam or playing without Barbarians with Germany/Ottoman/Songhai . If you really want a cultural victory with Rome, try to play with at least 2 cities . Their UU got obsolete quickly if you're playing Standard/Quick speed, but on Epic/Marathon,you can enjoy their for more time, just like with any other Civilization .
