Routing problems

After being quite pleased with the demo, I downloaded the full version from Direct2Drive tonight. But, that fun has dissolved into frustration as I can't seem to route my trains between cities that appear to be connected.

Scenario: Southwest US
Route: LA to San Diego
Problem: The cities appear to be connected but when I try to route mail and passengers between LA and SD, SD appears greyed out suggesting the cities are not connected.

Clearly the cities are not connected and I think there must be something wrong with my technique. When laying track, I frequently run into cases where the track is blocked by the little red and white signs. Sometimes, I have success deleting the rail block or overwriting the rail block by dragging new track over the sign. But, this is very troublesome in cities because the rail block is sometimes associated with the station (i.e. when I click the sign, the entire station is highlighted, not just the sign).

In the scenario described here, there was one of these rail blocks right in the middle of the city and it appeared to be linked to the entire station so I was unable to clear it out. I was able to route trains between LA and points north.

Any tips on extending track between two cities to eliminate this problem? It is really frustrating and has caused me to have to abandon both of my attempts to play tonight. I just don't like investing an hour into the game only to get to a point where I can't route between cities. I have to stop playing because I can't get them connected and it essentially shuts down my strategy.

Thank you,
Jason

If you double track that will make for a problem. Try laying one set first without double tracking.

If you arne't double tracking and are just laying one track down...make sure when you lay 5 miles of track then scroll to the edge of screen...then start to lay track again..make sure you see the Green lay track arrows at the end of the track. Don't start laying track in the middle of an exsisting track. This game is too ******** to know that it's the same track.

Good luck.

u must see that the track u laid out doesnt have any odd turns. cos if it does, then the train cant go there. for eg. if u make a curving track going in the left direction and joining an existing track. then the train will go towards left only after joining the track. to make it go to the right side, u will have to build a curve going right and joining the existing track.

Same issue here - ended up uninstalled the game.

Does the patch help at all?

The AI, which is loopy at best, will decide where trains run. If all three trains are running point-point then you end up with a train wreck on one track. Like the previous poster said, routing those trains to other points will put them on different tracks. This plays into laying track and deciding where to send the consists. This is where I wish the game allowed the choice of a slower clock giving more time to plan routes and review the city's demands.
