RT02 Midway Island

We find God, more killin'
June, 1942

Mozaltav and such. It's June 1942 and Osaka just became a four-headed hydra.

Now our soldiers have many choices when asking a deity to take mercy on the souls of our enemies as they sink lifelessly beneath the waves. How thoughtfull. Continuing the battle of the ... er... potential cities, Roosey didn't do much IBT, except make it easier for us to strike our mighty vengence.

battlejune1942.jpg

First off, three fighters knotch down the new battleship, so the enemy now has three half-healthy battleships. Within striking distance, we have three subs and one battleship, all healthy. A second battleship is close by. But first, I'll recon some fighters to make certain there are no more around the corner.

Nope, all's clear. Time for some more light-hearted, good-natured killin'! First up, the Yamato cleaves through battleship three of the Americans. Us: 3. US: 0. I next promote the submarine Revenge to flanking , but he's only at 21/24 health. His odds against BS4 are only 68%. Not strong enough. However, a healthy sub has 84% odds against him.

And BS4 is goes down by way of submarine. Us: 4. US: 0

BS5 is combat one and in coastal waters. Even a healthy sub has only 61% odds, so he'll have to wait until next turn before earning the privilege of dying by Japanese hands. I feel bad for him. He has to wait a whole month before joining his brothers in Merlin's realm. :(

I also promote our second battleship to combat I, more to heal him than anything.

On to July. To be continued...

Revenge is a dish best served at the bottom of the ocean
July, 1942

Our Anarchy is finally over and Roosey converts to Christianity. IBT, the limping battleship tried to make a run for it, but only deeper into our territory. Let's finish this battle.

endofbattle.jpg

We have 91.6% odds with the Missouri against their BS5. Just in case, the Yamato, Revenge, Wrath, and Botany Bay can all also strike this turn. I think that Battleship's going down. And roosey has just lost his fifth battleship. Us: 5. US: 0. Ouch. This game might be easy if the AI continues to use navy this badly.

5 to 0, boys. I think I'll recon some fighters and end here to let Strauss take the Admiralty. Oh dammit! I meant to move one carrier and didn't realize it was linked to everything else. Sorry. Guess the recon will have to wait another turn. I do want to stress the value of fighter recon. With three fighters per carrier, we can see one third of the map by spacing out our carriers. It's fantastic.

Anyway, on to Strauss.

Sounds like an interesting battle so far. Battleships do cause collateral damage, so using them after a massive airstrike is a good idea if attacking a stack. I recommend giving the subs first strike or flanking promotions when available. First strikes are good for taking out weakened defenders and of course flanking will allow the subs to hopefully withdraw when necessary to fight another day.

Good lord. Those Americans really must replace their admirals with more capable ones, instead of letting politicians take command.

How the hell did we get 4 religions in a single turn of anrachy? Is it a feature of Modern Era start?

--

Yes. This is a feature of all starts higher than Ancient. After turn 1 the religions get dished out because nobody can research their techs anymore. You were lucky and got 4, Roosey has the other 3.

It's the only other name for a battleship of the pacific that I could remember. Well, that and the Arizona. But either way, the only Japanese battleship I could remember was Yamato, though I hope we fare better than the original.

There are gonna be alot of builds that need to be done. Police State wont be needed for awhile as youre gonna need basic infrastructure.
Beauracracy seems like a better choice than Nationhood. Where is all your income gonna come from. From the screenies, you only gave yourself 200 to start. Youll eat that up fast in unit cost. Thats about the same as i have in the beginning of a game after goody huts and with only 1 scout and a warrior. Your capitol needs to carry the cash load for awhile.
I would try to spread those missionaries you get around. You may not have time to build extra ones now....but some religions you have will spread anyway. Switch to the religion that at least 2 cities have and run Org Religion while you build Infrastructure.
Running Mercantilism over State Property is a toss up, but for me, the extra hammer alone might be worth it. Im curious as to what civics Roosevelt is running. Can you still Build the Oracle? If you can, Chop a forge, then chop the Oracle. Or wait 899 turns to rocketry....lol.
I really enjoy the naval warfare part of civ. But, as you have found out, the AI does some real idiotic stuff. My suggestion would be to move your entire fleet to Midway right after they have healed. Pack as many Marines as you feel safe with....ie: How many do you want to leave at home base. The reason you want to go now is before the culture builds up. Land those marines on that jungle tile and hunker down while the battleships bombard it and the fighters take the units down to half. the sooner you go, the better.
on your way there, as you battle their ships, try to get at least 1 medic promotion, youll need it if only to heal faster.

It took me longer than expected, and I didn't even finish my turns:blush:

I don't think this game will work out. The concept is good, but simply going by the Modern Era start isn't. Even with this start, we still have to build everything from scratch. Next to that, on my last turn (December 1942) our first ship was disbanded because of a lack of funds (-20 gold at 0% science). Researching Rocketry would take 20592 turns. And since Rex says we have to launch at least two nukes, this game could take a very long time:lol:.

The American fleet is almost destroyed, all they still have are 2 Destroyers and a couple of subs I think. And they have to start from scratch too, so we won't be seeing new opponents soon.

I would suggest starting over, and this time use the Worldbuilder for giving both civs a couple of developed cities (/ island fortresses) and giving the AI a larger fleet. Beside that, we should up the difficulty level some to allow the AI a production advantage, like the US had in WW2. Now that I mention it, would the AI actually focus on building these ships or would it build useless buildings or units (considering the situation) like Theatres or Artillery anyway?

So to sum it all up, we didn't put enough thought into this. If everyone agrees with me, I have some more precise ideas about all this. If you don't agree, I will finish my turnset. But I should warn you, there won't be many ships left at turn 10 unless some divine creature gives us 22 gpt soon:lol:

Well point taken, and I'll take all of the blame on this one. One thing I *might* be able to do is start a game in 4000BC and figure out how to have the AI play both sides for the next 500 turns so that both sides have an organic sort of emprie.

The other flaw that Strauss was kind enough not to point out is that carriers with full fighter compliments and a couple of support ships seem to be more than a match for AI battleships. My first few turs really summed things up.

So I'm thinking that the concept in general is flawed. Since we really didn't have a ton of interest in the first place, we *could* just scrap it. Or, we could create the two organic empires, scrap the carrier theme, give both sides about 20 of every modern ship, and just have island hopping fun.

I'd like to hear your ideas, Strauss, or anyone else's. I'd still like to have a modern naval battle.

I'm afraid you're right about that. The AI is *clearly* not capable of a naval campaign: they just move their damaged ships further into enemy waters. And the way we're using Carriers here doesn't give the AI a chance. The only way we might counter this is by giving it a large production advantage. But even then I think we would just delay the inevitable for the AI.

If we decide to scrap this game, do you have any other ideas Rex? I would still like to play an SG with you.

Always new ideas. But I'm not ready to give up on a modern naval theme just yet. For the moment, let's see if others have ideas in that vein. If two days goes by and no one is willing to fight for this game, I'll scrap it and start up another. I'll reserve spots for you guys in here, if you'd like.

Well, I certainly could build a map for you if you wish. It would be a modern start but I'd mature the cities so that playing is possible. Just ask.

Well, there are ways to try to 'mask' the AI's incapability at sea, but I don't think it would really make this much fun. But maybe I'm just being too negative. I'll join you whatever you decide to do (unless it involves pholk being naked:twitch:)

That would be the best (only) way to make it work. Perhaps you could give the US some of its west coast, with lots of production there. Japan's home base would have less of this production.

I would agree that it doesn't sound like much fun right now. Is there a WWII Pacific scenario already available that we could have Imhotep modify to meet our original intent? In the end, I think our use of carriers probably would decimate the enemy since the AI isn't likely to be smart enough to screen capital ships with destroyers. This kind of game would probably be best played on multiplayer. I'm willing to stick with it though.

lurking again.

That's too bad guys but the idea was sound and interesting. I checked some names out and it appears the "Enterprise" was an aircraft carrier back then and also "Hornet". I think the "Yorktown" was an American Battleship. Of course these were all American ships but the Japanese names were quite cryptic in a sense.

You might have more fun if you added in the British campaign against the Germans giving them lots of subs and the British battleships such as "The Hood" (sunk by the Bismarck) and the "Prince of Wales" (the battleship that eventually sunk the Bismarck). Of course it was accompanied by an aircraft carrier but an old style one (don't recall the class type)

Will look forward to see what you come up with.

Having Imhotep to legendarily-build us a map is one way to go. I'll further suggest that we have one more AI to make the game slightly more fun. Didn't the Chinese, Russian or British have some naval presence in the Pacific theatre as well?

Oh, and given enough production, the AI will build lots of ships (in addition to lots of land troops). But currently, short of writing an AI script, there is no way to tweak the AI to do naval battles more intelligently. What you could do is give them some super-medic ships to alleviate the issue of them sending injured ships deeper into our seas though.
