I know a fair number of you play with no ruins. For those who do - am I imagining things, or is the AI in BNW not going after ruins as much? I seem to be opening way more ruins than I used to in GNK.

They are, they just aren't scouting the ways you are. They are essentially set to auto patrol and aren't very efficient at it.

How do you scout?
I use auto explore because I'm lazy, is that bad?

Its not very effective. Especialy if you are using more then one scout on the same landmass. The scouting pattern itself isnt good, multiple units may move to close together and they dont take into account where the enemy has allready been (aka no-goody-land).

I always manually scout. Maybe I've just gotten better at scouting over time. I just seem to notice after BNW that I've gotten a few more ruins in general than I did previously.

At the beginning is better to scout manually, at least until there are still ruins around (i.e. until it is apparent that a good portion of the map has been explored by the AI). I build two scouts and send them and the initial warrior at three different directions in order to maximize coverage.
A little trick is not to scout on the coast but to stay a bit in the interior, in order to reveal more land when you pass. There are no ruins in the water after all! A different story is when you are scouting your close surrounding to plant a city: in that case you want to scout the coast to see whether there are any sea resources.

I am one of those no ruins people. When trying out The Shoshone, I noticed the AI is real stupid on exploring. I am over The Shoshone and am back to no ruins.

Ruins or no ruins, I did'nt even imagine that some people could auto-explore at game's beginning !

It's so important to optimize your path.

And fun to discover your surrounding lands/resources/neighbours (ok this could only be me).

i always manual control everything - workers, scouts, road building, etc

Ditto, the Expolring is part of my early game fun. Plus the AI does not care about CS borders when exploring. I know it is just a little hit and easy to over come. But it just annyoys me.

Also, the AI will leave little Fogs on the shore and that just cannot happen. It hurts me to see it. Also, I prefer a giant circle arround my start to see where my cities are going. The AI will just go willy nilly.

Agree with both ! I don't know up to which difficulty level you can play with automated workers/scout without hurting you too much.

A good test to do !

Seeing how many levels below the one you're normally playing you still could manage to win. It will set you more on an equal foot with the AI to have all those stupid guys working for you. (and maybe closer to "reality" having your "subordinates" doing things upside down ! ;))
