I have started this thread for civfanatic diplomats to put together advice to fellow players of Diplomacy that they have learned from playing the game recently.

I will start with this "rule" that I feel all civfanatic diplomats should follow, it is this:

(This is something I will really have to learn and practice as I love trying to build alliances of the weak.)

When you have a Nation at your mercy destroy it even if it will compromise your position.

This is going to be my primary rule from now on as I've had enough of being Mr Nice Guy and it running me into trouble. In the case that has sent me over the edge myself and my ally offered survival to Austria instead of destroying him and he stabbed us and all he will achieve is the further rise and rise of the dominant pair England and Germany who have already taken Austrian territory. In the same situation I'd do what I am doing in the self same game to Turkey, if they are at my mercy, they die

Spoken like someone who just had their a$$ handed to them.

My rule is: TALK. Talk until your last unit is pulled off of the board. Talk to the guy killing you, talk to people far away. Talk until people tell you to shut up.

Talk.
