Hi, I recently installed civilization iv on my laptop running ubuntu linux with wine 1.0 installed. I have both the cds for the installation (obviously I bought them) and when I try to run civilization iv, I get a "cannot locate the cd-rom" message with both the cds I insert. Could anybody explain why this is happening? How do I fix this? Thanks.

I don't have any experience with Ubuntu, but the usual reason for this error is due to problems with your optical drive drivers or firmware.

Maybe Ubuntu doesn't have drivers/firmware compatible with the Civ IV securom copy protection. Or (hopefully) they do, but you just need to download updated ones!

I play cIV on my laptop running Ubuntu 8.04 without problems.

You have to follow the instructions in the app database you can find at http://www.winehq.org/. You have to include several genuine windows .dll files. The instructions include that you have to use a no-cd crack for the game - it doesn't run without one.

The reason is that games' copy protection systems need special drivers (securom and so on) which are not available for *nix.

Regards,
Jensen
