Runtime error with no message

All right,
So I am playing CIV Vanilla (but it does this on even the expansions (I have COMPLETE)),
and every now and then at seemingly random intervals the game will crash and show an error box with no text, it only has an "OK" button but even that doesn't have any text, I click the black ok box and another error comes up that sometimes is blank, and sometimes says "runtime error". Nothing else.
When the game crashes it throws the resolution all out of whack until the computer is restarted. It gets REALLY annoying, it sometimes does as often as every two turns!
I really like this game and it's killing me that I can't play it effectively (I've been dying to kill Elizabeth for like FOREVER )

If it makes any difference, I believe the time between crashes is longer when my graphix are turned down, but hey, I missed the animation for my Nuke...

I went a really long time without a crash, and then lavishly used a nuke, and right before the animation for said nuke, the game crashes. So it looks like some sortof graphics overload or something (though showed nuke animation after I restarted).
Any Ideas?

I finally got a message! :
Runtime Error!
Program: ...es\sid meier's civilization 4 complete......... (etc)

The application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
