S-06 Guerrillas in the Mist

There's a chance I'll be able to play Friday, but if not, I won't be able to get to until Sunday. If thERat wants to swap, just say so.

mike, let me know whether you can play Friday, else I will swap with you...

What is our stand on the patches? I can't get BtS for a while here anyway, thus I won't patch warlords as well unless everyone wants that

That's a good question. The warlords patch does not really do anything as far as I can see from the changelist, just a few bugfixes. I would quite like to install BTS after I have played my last SGOTM turnset though. Will the saves still be compatible if we play some with the patch and some without?

ThERat, why don't you go ahead and play today. I still don't know if I'll have time later after work tonight or not.

As for the patch, this is the only SG or GoTM type thing I have going on right now, so I can install it if everyone is going to. I would think that installing BTS wouldn't have an effect on the Warlords installation, so I'd be surprised if you create a problem by installing BTS.

I think when you install BTS it patches warlords automatically.

But if you can patch without installing BTS also, then that seems like a good option.

Blid, compromise, do you have any reason not to patch, like GOTMs or RB events?

If not, then I'd like to patch since I got BTS today :).

I have a reason not to patch, because I'm still hoping to find time for adventure 21. I do have reasons to patch too, because PBEMs I'm in would switch automatically. So it shall be dual install.

save for masochists

1.1040AD
424 turns left, so this is actually turn 1...
the map was a good idea to create choke points. The only slight problem we have here, we got no choke points
In fact, the enemy is everywhere, this will get tough

block the north, but in the south we are in trouble

IT Tolosa gets attacked by 2 cat which are both defeated

2.1055AD
lose a cat and an axe at 88% trying to get rid of a small stack
don't you just love the odds
defeat the small stack of HA and a sword, huge stack incoming from the north

guerilla12.jpg

pillage a little

IT what a bad turn, we lose 2 spears near Tolosa to 2 HA...and th LB I parked on the forested hill in the north
Simply too many troops

3. 1070AD
we are losing way too many units, but I am forced to attack, else we lose iron
lose another unit next to Tolosa at good odds

stack in the north
guerilla13.jpg

our cats eat up the big stack, 3 more units defeat almost all units there, good work

guerilla14.jpg

4.1085AD
the enemy now avoids attacking Tolosa, but goes for the iron, no good
defeat both units on the iron
situation in the north get more tricky again

IT few attacks, but enemies invade deeper and deeper

5. 1100AD
need to sacrifice some units to prevent pillaging and more
get the next GG, decide to attach it to a LB in the north to prevent the worst

IT Tolosa almost falls, but we hold on for another few turns maybe
we lose the iron though
did I mention that everything has been pillaged in the west?

6.1106AD
defeat remaining units in the north, losing a cat

IT Tolosa loses an archer to repeated attacks
our pillager stacks get attacked more and more relentlessly

7 1112AD
we are still holding on but the air is getting very thin

IT we lose another 2 units in Tolosa and one of our pillager stacks is almost wiped out

8.1118AD
there isn't much to do without troops

IT our pillager stacks are officially wiped off the surface of this planet

9.1124AD
well, nothing to do but watch in agony at our pillaged land

10.1130AD
time to declare the game lost

conclusion: AWE is not winnable with normal settings. Unless you create some faked conditions, it is not possible to expand without going bankrupt. One would need to expand to protect the core though.

IMHO, its fine to play AW up to prince, everything above that difficulty merely becomes a pain and isn't fun. You either worry about the economy or being hit left and right. AW is fun at C3C due to the good counter measures and the fact that expanding is good.
Without defensive bombardments and the economic penalty for expansion, AW isn't a feasible concept.

OK, fine to call it a loss. No problem there, lesson learnt. There is no reason why always war should actually work if the AI is playing competantly, so no problem.

I hope the team enjoyed the few turnsets they did play and look forward to playing again with you in the future.

I'm back home now, but from reading through the action since I left, I see that it doesn't matter. I agree with the conclusion that competent emperor AIs make standard-settings AW unwinnable.

Thanks for organizing the attempt, sooooo. It was fun while it lasted.
