I think it's safe to assume that any hat before 1825 AD can be refer to as "funny"

Its from the anniversary of the great Shah of Achaemenid Persia, Shah Kûrosh-e Bozorg (Cyrus the Great) which was held in Iran, in the seventies.

2,500 anniversary.... if only we still had a shah. Oh well, the cavalry are very cool-looking. The hats do look like something the KKK would wear; the KKK steals perfectly good hat designs.

Edt: Back in the day, these kinds of cavalry would put the hurt on Byzantium, Rome, and pretty much the rest of the Middle East.
