Caused by the BP spill? Mutation from Fukashima? Convergence of the Gulf Stream hitting UFO exhaust in the Bermuda Triangle? Actually a large mantis shrimp!

Whatever it is... I have another reason to go to the mountains for vacation!

This foul beast was plucked from the depths by a fisherman named Steve Bargeron, who then sent pictures to the The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The Commission posted the photos on its Facebook page, which is how we got here, with you sobbing under your desk.

Both types strike by rapidly unfolding and swinging their raptorial claws at the prey, and are capable of inflicting serious damage on victims significantly greater in size than themselves. In smashers, these two weapons are employed with blinding quickness, with an acceleration of 10,400 g (102,000 m/s2 or 335,000 ft/s2) and speeds of 23 m/s from a standing start. Because they strike so rapidly, they generate cavitation bubbles between the appendage and the striking surface. The collapse of these cavitation bubbles produces measurable forces on their prey in addition to the instantaneous forces of 1,500 newtons that are caused by the impact of the appendage against the striking surface, which means that the prey is hit twice by a single strike; first by the claw and then by the collapsing cavitation bubbles that immediately follow. Even if the initial strike misses the prey, the resulting shock wave can be enough to stun or kill the prey.

Holy cats! If that shrimp went after prey "significantly greater in size" than itself it could be going after surfers!

Yeah, I get it "jumbo shrimp" is an oxymoron. Ha ha ha.

[...] Actually a large mantis shrimp!

That is a nasty shrimp. I am sure it is just a naturally occurring new type of this species. Even if it has 24 eyes and a spare exosceleton usually hidden under some rocks in the bottom of the sea.

As the song goes : "Satan is a looser and he's my shrimp" ! :D

Reading from that wiki page on the 'mantis shrimp', the more dangerous species is called also by the nice and gentle epithets of

-Stomatopod

and

-Odontodactylos

The first means that its legs are like mouths. The latter than its fingers are teeth.
Very pleasant. I hope it stays in Australia where it belongs :D

It's called false perspective illusion.

Yeah you can see by the focus of the picture that the shrimp is significantly closer to the camera than the dude's hand. There was a famous picture of camel spiders in Iraq floating around for a while that used the same trick to make people think that camel spiders were gigantic monsters. Without a proper side by side with something of a known size to compare to there really isn't a way to tell from the picture how big the thing actually is. Notice the article never actually gives it a size.

I don't care how big it may seem. This is all I have to say...

The Satan shrimp may be good, but I've only heard his side of the story. I'm suspending judgment until I hear from the God shrimp.

Great Oatmeal page. It is truly an incredible beast.
