I've been wanting to put some old art of mine on the web. It's charcoal on paper, so I should just need a basic scanner...I know nothing about scanners. Should I just get the popular model on amazon.com or what?

Well, if you don't already have a printer I'd recommend the hp psc 1315 I got it ~6 months ago with my new computer and it's been flawless and the copier feature(colour or black) is very convenient. scanning area is limited to just over a standard 8.5*11 sheet so if your drawings are large it won't work too well. Best of all it's really cheap

Hmmmm, this isn't that cheap, but the Canon Canoscan 8000F is pretty good, I have no link, but IIRC it is somewhere around £90-110, although I picked up a display unit for £45 :mischief:.

Here is one of the first things scanned in, as part of it was needed for an RPG...

This is on it's lowest quality setting, and then being compressed into a JPEG of less than half the file size.

The quality of pictures scanned in is absolutely amazing, I scanned in some old photos and they looked perfect, I then printed them on my new printer and it was nigh on impossible to tell the difference. Sadly though, I no longer have those pictures on my PC.

Also, if you need it, it has a negative scanner.

Although I am yet to test it, my school's photpgraphy department has the model down from my scanner and the scans are very good, though bested by the single role negative scanner.

But it all depends on your price range, unless you want to look on eBay or find one like I did.

That's a very nice scan. For price I was thinking as cheap as possible, since I don't have that much use for one other than to scan a few things.

Well if you only need it a couple of times, you should be able to find a photo copieing "shop".

It's not too expensive (comparatively cheap to buying a scanner for the odd picture) and the quality can be even better.

Just recently my grandpa got a copy of a one off WW2 artillery map that he used to use, and it looks absolutely perfect...

They should also be able to do almost any size copies.

Though you may need to look for one, and I have no names of companies (I doubt there are any large networks).

Hope that helps.

EDIT: Of you need it for the web, they might be able to put it on disk for you, you just need to ask.

I'm sure they can.
