I Just began to create my own scenario and downloaded some units to use. I opened the units.gif file on a very standard scenario with no changes to the existing propramme, and pasted a unit into the units.gif just to experiment.

I put a different figure in place of the Warrior, but when I loaded the scenario a message appeared: ERR_BADPICFORMAT
File D:\Ss\Smeds\Port.cpp

Im not sure what all this means. I've read most of the literature on scenarios modification from this site but I cant even do a simple thing like swap an icon!

Thanks

If you're using MGE, I have a suggestion; use the units editor to replace units. The resulting file will be a new bmp, but that won't be a problem for the civ2 program. Moreover, you'll still have the original gif sitting right there in the scenario file in case you want to scrap it all and start over. I know there are some who swear by the cut-and-paste-in-the-gif method, (and who also curse the FW/MGE editors,) but this is by far the easiest and quickest method of swapping out unit graphics to customize your scenario. I believe also that if you don't have MGE, you can acquire an upgrade around here somewhere. I think this site has that upgrade in their downloads section.

My best advice is to use Paintshop Pro to do the cut'n paste -that is very good, it's free (shareware), and doesn't mess up, when you "save as" a gif-file. I never had any problems with that one. Always work on a copy of your original file, and make sure that palette and format (gif/bmp) is the same.
You can get Paintshop Pro from the web.
