i have the original civ2 and i can't seem to get Scenarios to work. can u fully explain how to install and play them in the this version.

Yeah, I asked a similar question recently (re ToT) and the answers I got were much appreciated but completely incomprehensible if you didn't know LOADS about computers, jargon etc. In the end I was none the wiser.

Any chance of some replies that cope for idiots like me?

couple of problems.
First..games are not backwards compatible.A scenario or even a game save from a later version will not work on previous versions.I can load a 2.42 save on MGE,but not the other way round.

Original Civ2 does not read events.txt.Any scenario worth its salt has an events.txt.

Yes, upgrade to MGE with Cedric Greenes patch.

I think this should be made better know or easier to find for newbie's.I think this month alone already four people asked me how to play scenario's under classic civII or TOT ,so me reffering to cedric greene's patch all the time.

Maybe we should make a sticky thread named:"how to upgrade youre Civ Version to MGE (scenario support)" ,with in that thread a link to the patch and ,very important ,how to install it ,because all these people that asked me how to upgrade their version asked me for tech support afterwards because they couldn't figure out how to install the patch.I have them the tech support ,but after four times having to help people for atleast an hour the question "how can i play scenario's under TOT (or classic) ?" realy behind's to work on my nerve's.

i have classic civ 2 and i would like to play colonization 3 scenario which requires mge to play and i am having troubble updating my game  . could someone fully explain what and how i update my game cheers:D :goodjob:

p.s. thanks in advance ;)

if u have Civ2 original patch it with Cedric Greene's MGE or ToT patch then

for MGE: scenarios must be install on their own folder (Civ2/scenario/name of the scenario) if sounds are in a different zip install it in a "sound" sub folder (Civ2/scenario/name of the scenario/sound)

for ToT: same as MGE but..
-if u have ToT (and not a Civ2 patch to ToT) install ToT 1.1 patch
and u must delete units & terrains animations &r civilopedia graphiks
-make a backup of the "original" folder
-delete all *img.bmp and *.spr files of the "original" folder
-play scenarios !
if u want to play an "original" game with terrains & units animations just use your backup of the "original" folder

there are patchs (about 6) ranging from mge 1-6

which ones do i download and where do u put the files in my classic civ 2

could someone full explain how upgrade classic civ2 to mge

if someone has upgraded explain what they did that would be great

:)

K first I assume you are getting the most recent patch from http://hometown.aol.com/cedricgreene/ . Either you can download the four .ace files, "MGEPatch.ace, MGEPatch2.ace, MGEPatch3.ace, and either MGE-242.ace (for classic Civ 2) or ToTtoMGE.ace (for Civ 2 ToT)" or you can download MGE-242.exe or the ToTtoMGE.exe for the appropriate version.

If you download the .ace files you will need a copy of WinAce 2..00 or later which you can get from www.winace.com to unzip them. These files need to be extracted to the Civ 2 folder eg. C:\mps\Civ2\ or C:\program files\Test of Time\ , if/when it asks you to overwrite current files click yes/ok. After that is complete then go to www.ligos.com and download the latest Indeo video drivers and codecs. Make sure your Civ 2 disc is in the drive and start up the game.

If you download the .exe please make sure you have recently installed a copy of Civ 2 and have not modified it in any way (except using the official patches to upgrade it to the latest version 2.42 for Classic and 1.1 for ToT, which is necessary), double-click the .exe and put in the directory which Civ 2 resides eg. C:\mps\Civ2\ or C:\program files\Test of Time\ , the .exe will take out the unnecessary files and add the necessary ones. Go to www.ligos.com and download the latest Indeo video drivers and codecs. Make sure your Civ 2 disc is in the drive and start up the game.

This should get the game up and working, if for some reason it didn't work uninstall and reinstall the entire game then the official update and finally my patch again strictly following the instructions. IMPORTANT!!! This is only for the PC versions of Civ 2 that have been installed in English, and possibly won't work with other languages, though I have been told it has worked with Polish, Russian, German, French, and Spanish versions.
For scenarios you need to have a scenario subfolder Civ2\scenarios\ which you will create a new subfolder for each seperate scenario inside of the scenario folder eg Civ2\scenarios\War1812\ or Civ2\scenarios\CivI . Almost all scenarios work with MGE so they should load properly if setup correctly.

i downloaded and put every in civ 2file. does the back drop different to normal civ2 when u open it, i.e. change to looking like mge
because my opening screen shot is stil the same wen first get int civ2

Should be the same, there should be one extra option called "Multiplayer Game".
