Scientific Credibility of the Bible (Dont laugh!)

Maybe to observe his creation and make sure he liked what he saw?? :p

Im sorry I got off topic, I was just wondering if christianity was for all of mankind then why where some people banned from it at the start. Lets get back to the topic.....

ok God would have unlimited energy right? then how come God Rested on the Seventh Day. After creating the Earth?

Again, I think the question is a theological one, rather than practical. (although that's just my own opinion). Don't feel I'm being agressive here, I'm not. :) But I am more than happy to attempt to explain this on a thread where I am not deviating off topic, if you wish. ;)

I believe most of the history in the bible is accurate.

Sure Moses did not create giant walls of water, but he did find a passage across the red sea.

Now the People of Judah recognized the Egyptians did not follow them across. So they assumed it was because they were not able to -- the sea did not open for them. I believe they were just not that desperate to get the runaways back.

Of course all the geologies of the Kings are accurate (As we have no contrary data).

And by the way Christ did come, be he man or god.

The star of Bethlehem was observed by the Chinese to be a supernova. (Of course they did not use that term back then, or even understand why stars explode)
Note:the Chinese star was abserved on 6 AD, but that is due to the inaccuracy of mideaval cronologists in calculating the year of the birth of christ.

The problem is that there is no historical evidence to proove Moses existed. If we are using the bible as scientific evidence, Moses and the exodus would be archaeologically proovable. But the evidence suggests that Israelites were culturally native to Canaan.

If there was a supernova observed by the Chinese in 6 AD then the records have not survived. The earliest supernova we have records of (from the Chinese, Japanese and Arabs) is the 1084 AD supernova in Orion.

I heard the star of bethlehem could have been a rare sighting of jupiter and saturn at their closest to the earth.

It interesting that in the book of Revelation there is a description of a star falling to the earth and as a result a large amount of the water becomes undrinkable. The description is similar to that of a launched nuclear weapon. The name of the star is translated as Chernobyl in Russian.

The main problem being that Revelations was written in Greek, and Chernobyl itself didn't fall out of the sky.

Well, there are myriad scientific INaccuracies in the Bible. A quick roundup of all those I can easily remember:

-Genesis says that plants were created before the sun.
-Genesis says that birds came before land animals.
-Isiah 40:22 says that the Earth is round [often cited by "scientific Christians"] but 11:12 of the same book states it is flat. A clear contradiction, and both passages are floridly poetic - either could be metaphoric. Which is right?
-Genesis 30:37-39 is a profound misunderstanding of genetics. By putting spotted bark before pregnant lambs, Jacob "succeeded" in making them give birth to multicolored young. Yeah right
-Leviticus 11:20 says that insects have four feet. Actually, most of us know they have six.
-Proverbs 6:6 says of the ant: Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, [and] gathereth her food in the harvest. Again, a clear misunderstanding.

I also once posted a list of "interesting" Biblical laws which may reveal something about the social as well as scientific basis for the Bible. Here's a repost:

If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,

And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid:

Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth [the tokens of] the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate:

And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;

And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech [against her], saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these [are the tokens of] my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.

And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him;

And they shall amerce him in an hundred [shekels] of silver, and give [them] unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.

But if this thing be true, [and the tokens of] virginity be not found for the damsel:

Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.

Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity [her].

The passage may have been symbolic though. Chernobyl was the site of a nuclear disaster, thus it may the actual meaning may be associated with a nuclear object.

Or we may actually be completely discrediting the spirit in which Revelations was written - an attempted encouragement to seven suffering churches in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) written by an elder of the early church in the apocalyptic genre of litereature.

The bible says the Earth is flat

"Again, the devil took him [Jesus] to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world..."
(Matthew 4:8)

How can he see the whole world on top of a mountain if the earth is not flat?

That's not what it says at all.

The bible isn't supposed to be scientific fact. It's supposed to be the chronicle of how God created the Earth and everything on it, and sent his one and only son to die for our sins, and a guideline on how Christians should lead their lives. It is not a scientific source, and was never intended to be.

Why couldn't Satan, being the most high angel and God in man form see all the kingdoms of the world? If he can create the universe he probaby doesnt need to get on top of a mountian to see the tiny earth.

If I recall properly, the word in Greek that is often translated as Chernobyl in Russian refers to a particular plant. The Russian Chernobyl also refers to this plant entity I think.

Regardless, I think its dangerous territory to say that we have found the meaning of a poetic script in modern events based on some abstract connection, and then say that it is scientific evidence.

Yes, they both translate into English as "wormwood". But that's beside the point. This "interpretation" stuff is as much BS as Nostradamus.

I found an excellent site once. There was a conspiracy theorist wacko [Michael Drosnin] who came up with something called the Bible Code. Essentially he shuffled all the letters in the Bible into a 30x30 or so matrix for each page. Then, as in a crossword puzzle, he claimed to find information that was remarkably prophetic:

There is no way to ignore the clear fact that a computerized code in the Bible . . . accurately predicted the Gulf War, the collision of a comet with Jupiter, and the assassination of [Israeli Prime Minister] Rabin, also seems to state that the Apocalypse starts now, that within a decade, we may face the real Armageddon, a nuclear World War.

There was a gigantic commotion about this... until a guy working with a slightly inferior computer found the same kind of stuff in Moby Dick!

Just one example: a "divine" "prophecy" from Our Lord Herman Melville dealing with the death of Robert Kennedy at the hands of Sirhan Sirhan:

sirhan.gif

man, the bible code was a stretch, but the only intelligible words in the "dick code" are the ones that are in the original text.
