South African civs get 1 point for every 2 culture produced. 200 culture, 100 VP.
I used to think you don't get VP for killing units, because your score does not update immediately.
But since the Political Treatise works (culture score is only updated NEXT turn), killing units probably works as well.
I failed to take the English cities but managed to snag 2 German ones.
I narrowly beat Ethiopia on culture, 10 points behind on turn 99, 40 points ahead on turn 100, total of 6505. A bit too close for comfort. It would have been easier if I had bulbed the last writer (I didn't think it worked).
I avoided a war against Portugal until turn 99
As for the Ottoman game...
North African civs get 1 point for every 15 gold produced. 1500 GPT, 100 VP. Only gross gold per turn counts, so use the earned gold to rush buy units and building.
I had a rough game, all Europeans declared war on me on turn 10, and didn't sue for peace until turn 70. Bribing them to war, gifting them stuff and denouncing Egypt didn't help. The only thing that keeps them friendly is a large army, which you can't get.
By the end of the game I reached over 3000 gross GPT (2500 GPT from other civs) and 8000 VP.
The trick is to build some capital, sign a few friendship agreements and keep buying your friends full GPT in exchange for gold (they will drop to only 10 or 20 VP per turn for some reason, even though their gross is much higher).
The problem is building the initial sum of gold. Best done by selling a few cities, the closer they are to the buyer, the more they pay for the city, 50 to 200 GTP.
If you can reach over 2000 GTP gross you can avoid war with Ethiopia.
Useful tips I read in this thread.
- send you cavalry to Ethiopia to steal 1 or 2 unprotected settlers, this will slow them down a bit (ended with only 5000 VP in my game)
- take out the Italians asap, turn 30-50
- your navy will earn you a lot of cities to keep or sell as needed
An interesting idea would be to send your cargo ships to Suez, you could generate over 150 GPT for Egypt with that. Which you could buy back.
The code that computes the VP is in ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\Assets\DLC\Expansion2\Scenarios\ScrambleAfricaScenario\TurnsRemaining.lua
But it does not explain why Morocco and Egypt get so few VP when you buy their GPT
Search for -- GOLD/CULTURE VP
Drained 10+ city civ, gold score
morocco / egypt
turn 79: 989 / 1476
turn 78: 979 / 1448
turn 77: 967 / 1448
turn 76: 958 / 1434
Also, the AI culture or gold score will sometimes fail to update for 1 turn. You will see a big change in the next turn though.
