Sea Transport Question

Maybe I'm missing something here but it seems to me that in Civ IV, it's much harder to get ships that are capable of transporting units off your continent... (as opposed to earlier Civs)

For instance, a Caravel is the first ship capable of Ocean Travel but it can't carry any war-making units, right?

So that means that the Galleon is the first ship capable of moving war units to another continent...

Am I missing anything here? Was Civ II/III able to do this sooner?

Thanks!

You are correct. The galleon is the first intercontinental naval unit capable of carrying military. I can't speak for civ II/III because I never played them.

Thus, your target tech is astronomy. It can acquired at a reasonable time if you make an early run at liberalism.

OK... that's true... but doesn't making a run for something like force you to give up other techs? Techs that would be necessary?

Maybe I'm just stuck in the Civ II/III mindset of having to research every tech early on...

I like to have a specific focus when researching techs and trade with other civs to fill in gaps.
