HI
I'm completely new to this game so forgive me if I'm talking about issues that could be answered on another place. Also my english is so and so. I have tryed to find out how "sentry" works but I get no wiser. What is the differenc between that and "fortifie"? I looked it up in the wordbook and it said something like "guard", but I don't really understand the effect i has on the little guy.
I'm soon starting a cheiftain game after doing the tutorial some times and it will be lot of fun. Is it ok to ask for help in the game here if you send .sav files to look on for others? All seems so nice and helpful here and it would help me a lot.
How do you put the funny smilies in the message?

BYE!

Welcome Daghdha
Sentry puts the unit to 'sleep' it 'wakes up' when it is approached by another unit.

This allows you a number of things
1. You don't have to press 'space' for every unit that does not have orders.
2. The unit will wake up when approached by another civilization's units and await further orders.
3. You don't have to 'unfortify' units when you see another civilization's units approach.
4. IIRC The unit will only activate when another unit enters it's zone of control.

Regards

You must be using a version in a different language than english so I'm sorry but I don't know what "sentry" means. However, Fortifie means Fortify. When you fortify a unit they basically position themselves in their location to step up defense. When a unit is fortified its defense value is raised...I can't remember by how much, maybe 50%, but it could also depend on the terrrain they are on. Someone here will know for sure. So basically, if your unit is fortified, then it will have a higher defensive value. But remember, if you fortify your unit, it won't be automatically selected for a move on the next turn. You must 'wake' the unit to move it again, so don't forget about it. ALWAYS fortify the unitsin your cities.

Also, units heal themselves when they are fortified, unless they are in enemy territory. After you have "battlefield medicine" then they can heal anywhere.

As for the smilies, there should be a panel to the right of where you type your message (text box)

hope this helps.

Thanks a lot! So sentry is like allowing the unit to have a nice rest but to put up som "trip wire" so he wakes if someone bad guy comes along? And now I see why I did not understand so good because my city was attacked by bad guys (prince williams) and they were there all time so he never could rest and he was awake all time. Then he was like every other unit in the city. But I will fortify my men in the city in the future thanks to drahkkael.

A correction of what Drahkkael said: A unit can heal in friendly or neutral territory without being fortified. All that is required is the unit not move for a turn.

The key difference between Sentry and fortify.

Fortify provides a defense bonus. The units have dug in and will not move. They will not request any further orders until you change them from the forty state.

Sentry provides no defense bonus. You have ordered them to stay put until an enemy unit gets nearby. In military terms, a soldier placed on sentry duties watches the areas around unit to insure no bad guys are in the vicinity. If he finds enemies, he notifies the rest of the unit.

Actually the are 2 types of 'Sentry'

1. Your Unit wakes up when the 'bad guy' comes within sight.
2. Your Unit wakes up when anyone you don't own comes along.

I'm on vanilla Mac OS, and I've no sentry order available with any possible unit. I remember whe had it in the glorious times of Civ II. On which version are you running actually?

The Sentry option comes with one of the expansion packs. I think it's Conquests.

I think it also works differently than in Civ II - there, you could build a unit, put it on Sentry, and then it would ship out with the next transport or boat. I haven't seen that to be the case in Civ III.

@ Daghdha
When you have many units fortified in the city, I always have one unit awake. That way I can see what is going on near every city in my kingdom.

I always do this to stop an enemy unit sneak in and destroy the improvements (road, mine, etc) I've built for a city.

'Sentry' will not do this because if the unit can only see 1 space around it, the sentry unit will not wake up when the enemy is 2 squares away. :coffee:

So many good advice, thanks! But I don't really understand the two options you said fe3333au. The first I see, but how do I own units if they are not mine? Is it friends you mean that I have a deal with? And if so, how do I choose because there is only one button.

Option 2 is the second 'Sentry Button' it means that the sentry unit is asleep until it is woken up by anyone comming within range ... it doesn't have to be an enemy.

Hmmm ... to get the additional buttons ... I think ...
Get into the Options Menu (the one where you can change music volume, make grid-lines visible on map, etc ... there should be an option that you can click the box which will show all worker/unit buttons to be visible.

So then go back into the game and you will have many options for all units ... you will now even be able to re-name units ...

Hope this helps :goodjob:

Sentry should be 'Y' and Sentry-Wake On Enemy Only should be 'Shift-Y' regardless of what version you're playing.

Now, as I recall, the buttons were added with PTW, but the function has always been there.
